Evil Moggy

After my last post, I realized I should perhaps clarify my point as to: Why Moggy Is Evil. After all, I wouldn’t want anyone to take offense or wonder why I should be slandering someone on LJ. Because, of course, I’m not slandering Moggy. She knows she’s evil 🙂 (almost a la Dr. Evil)

Moggy is part of the Daring Duo of , of Von Allan Studioes. Comicopia members will obviously recognize the name in part due to the 10 page preview of Von’s upcoming Graphic Novel: The Road To God Knows…

Now, the reason for Moggy’s evilness rests on one thing only (at least from me! from what I’ve read of her exploits… well… ;)). In a recent post, she spoke about The 3-Day Novel Challenge. Huh? Yeah. Forget taking a month to write a novel (of course I’m talking about NaNoWriMo. No, go ahead and write one in 3 days – mainly, Labor Day Weekend. Not only that, but it’s a true “contest/ marathon” in the sense that you pay an entrance fee, and at the end, you send in your printed “book” -warts and all 🙂

I like that approach for two reasons. One, if you’re going to dish out $50, it means that you’re really more motivated to do it than to drop out after a couple of days or weeks. Two, the fact that a “real” person will then be reading the book means that what you’re attempting to accomplish is not just a babble-fest, but something a lot more legible and worthwhile than not. Is it possible? Of course it is. Those of you who know me or have read about it, my first time at bat with NaNo, I completed two novels of 50k+ words in the 30 days – and it was not all crap. Of course, because of that record, I was shocked into realizing what I could accomplish once I truly set a goal for myself.

As I said to Chantale this week – I may not be an athletic enough guy to attempt any kind of Extreme Sport Competition, but an Extreme Writing one? Hello!

So, basically, ever since Moggy’s post, I’ve been kicking this idea around in my head, and wondering how I can disappear for three days and attempt to write a novel with no clear “ending” (NaNo is set for 50k+, 3Day doesn’t have a word limit). And that’s what makes Moggy evil. Because her innocent mentioning of this contest has suddenly wrapped itself around my brain and is making everything else cloudy….

Darn you, Evil Moggy.

And THANKS! 🙂

Baseball Talk

Yeah, I know I’m not usually one for baseball talk (especially with Montreal losing The Expos a while back) but in replying to TEM (The Evil Moggy – and you know you’re evil because of what you did to me with that 3DayNovel thing!) she made me realize something I thought funny.

James is now in Pee Wee B and his team name is the Phillies. Well, it turns out that my couin Sal Fasano is ALSO now playing for the Phillies – The Philadelphia Phillies 🙂 I was telling Moggy about how for a brief moment in time (those of you who’ve been reading me may remember) that he was supposed to play for the Ottawa Lynx. In checking up on him today, I found stuff that really made me laugh. First off, this is the face I’m used to seeing: from the Baseball Almanac. But then, I find out about Sal’s Pals and laughed my head off. A Fu Manchu? Oh boy… 🙂

So, I thought I’d share the links with you 🙂

End of an Era

Well, we finally took the plunge last night. We’re moving off of dial-up to something much faster. We don’t really need High Speed at home right now, but the 48k dial-up was just getting in the way of efficiency. Thus, we’ll be jumping to 600k and at the same time we’re killing our Bell line (and L.D. plan with Rogers) to go with Videotron’s IP Telephony.

Yes, the evil Borg of Videotron have once again managed to suck me in as clients. I hated their service and jumped to LOOK TV as soon as it became available in my area something like 10 years ago. I promised I’d never go back. In a way, I haven’t, because I’m not getting their cable or satellite service. Heck, we’re quite happy with our regular TV and Rabbit Ears. We catch what we need and that’s more than good enough.

But, lo and behold, one unfortunate event in this move is that I will be cancelling my service with ColbaNet. These guys were always great and it’s a testament to this little company that could that they managed to last all these years and have continued to grow. Had they been able to provide as affordable a package as I’m getting with VT, I would have stayed with them. So now, after… what? 10 years? more? My dear aragona at colba net account will soon be history… as will Chantale’s account that I created for her back in 98/99. Wow. Who could believe you could get nostalgic for an email account?

At any rate, now comes the almost-impossible-to-complete task of letting everyone know about the address change. They will, of course, now be savageland accounts. After all, regardless of what service providers we move to in the future, I will continue to own and operate Savage Enterprises and Savage Enterprises Publishing and thus that domain is assured 🙂

wow…

I miss my family something fierce today…

I picked up James and Melyssa Saturday afternoon instead of Friday after school due to James’ having a baseball practice. For that same reason, I dropped them back off on Sunday morning as opposed to after supper. With Chantale working and Kyle’s schedule that was the only available option. It’s quite something to see Kyle’s reactions when his siblings are around and he gets such a huge kick hanging out in their rooms. His favorite thing to do is dance (by bum-squirming/ jumping on the floor) in James’ room when James has his stereo on, and sitting on Melyssa’s lap slamming down on the keyboards of the Casio system in her room 🙂

Only 10 months old and already he demands to be included when they play together 🙂

Chantale, my beautiful wife… sigh… yesterday felt like the first real summer day. Being able to relax outside in the evening (if even for a bit) and just enjoying the family and home we built… it just makes everything worthwhile. Getting up at 5 to get ready for work is harsh, but it helps assure that I can be at home before 6pm. Being able to relax together and talk about our future… I just can’t conceive of not having more children together 🙂

Kyle is just so amazing. The intelligence in his eyes, the way you can see his constant quest for exploring and learning new things… how he interacts with us, and especially how he seeks comfort and settles in when it’s time for naps or bedtime. It is so calming, so heartwarming, so… right. I had a whole other post/ subject started about this so I’ll stop here since I’ll end up reverting to it soon.

It’s funny. I believe it was Friday night, I was working on an editorial piece for the next Comicopia. I was writing about (and later talking to Chantale about) how even with all the hassles and schedule-juggling that I have to do to get James and Melyssa, 1 hour of exposure to our Family is worth it because of the benefits they get from it and how much their lives are enriched. On Saturday, James told us about how he had his first sex-ed class in school this past week and how nothing came up that he didn’t already know because of the talks we’ve given him. And then, driving them back on Sunday, I gave them a brief lesson in the history and origin of words and explained to them the concept and usage of words such as “bitch”, “bastard”, “Wop”, and the famous “F-word”. It was probably the most “teaching” we did in the shortest period of time with them…

Yeah, I miss my family something fierce today… I can’t wait for June 23rd and the week of vacation that’ll follow…

Headache…

Really have not been sleeping well recently. Heck, last night was more a night of “naps” than true sleep. Lights out at 11pm… eyes open at 2am… eyes open at 4 am… get out of bed at 5:30am… catch 6:42am train… barely read 2 pages of “History of Freemasonry”… pass out until downtown.

bleah.

So, considering where my brain and energy is at, I thought I’d share something a friend of mine sent me a little while back (thanks Mary!). Worth a giggle and there are those out there who know whereof it speaks 😉

DAVID LETTERMAN’S TOP 10 DRAWBACKS TO WORKING IN A CUBICLE

  • #10 – Being told to “think outside the box” when you’re in a freakin’box all day long.
  • #9 – Not being able to check e-mail attachments without turning around to see who’s behind you.
  • #8 – Cubicle Walls do not offer much protection from any kind of gun fire.
  • #7 – That nagging feeling that if you press the right button, you’ll get a piece of cheese.
  • #6 – Lack of roof rafters for the noose.
  • #5 – The walls are too close together for the hammock to work right.
  • #4 – 23 power cords – 1 outlet.
  • #3 – Prison cells are not only bigger; they also have beds and a bathroom.
  • #2 – The carpet has been there since 1976 and shows more signs of life than your co-workers.

And the #1 drawback to working in a cubicle is….

  • #1 – You can’t walk out and slam the door when you quit.

    Update

One of the biggest problems about not posting daily is that when you finally do get around to posting, you either have too much to say or you’ve forgotten much of what you wanted to share. Just an observation. At any rate, let’s begin.

First off, I wanted to state how much fun I’m having with Kyle these days. With Chantale working weekends and thursday/friday nights, we get to hang out a lot more than we did and do a lot of stuff together. Unfortunately, outdoor plans get a little ruined with all the recent rain, but it won’t last forever. He’ll be 10 months old on Monday and he popped his seventh tooth yesterday! He’s too funny 🙂 Ever since last week we’ve been introducing him to a lot of different foods. Heck, he even partook of my lasagna birthday supper! 🙂 Actually, I wanted to use my lasagna icon to post this news! I think I still will 🙂

The installation of the fence has been delayed due to rain. Sheesh. Now my backyard looks like a jungle. (heh. my own private Savage Land 😉 )

See? I was just interrupted and now my entire train of thought has been tossed out the window. oh well. I guess I’ll just end with this other bit of news: I had lunch with my buddy Gabriel Morrissette yesterday and he confirmed to me that Mr. Comics (Ty Templeton) will be issuing a trade edition of the current Planet of the Apes mini-series, and a SECOND mini-series HAS been confirmed. That is very good news. Let’s face it, Canada needs a Comic Publisher – one that won’t overdo it and choke on their releases.

One last thing before I go. Yesterday’s Fast Fiction piece. It was written without a twist/ surprise ending simply because: (a) too many folks keep expecting twist endings and that’s not really what an FF is supposed to be about, and (b) it was more about sharing sentiments/ feelings, than anything else. Is the “speaker” *really* dead? What do you think?

Okay, I’m off now. I’m in a much better mood, by the way. Sleep and nice chats/ cozying with my wife helps a lot 🙂

Fast Fiction: When She Was Little

[Fast Fiction: When She Was Little – May 18, 2006]

When she was little, the house was her whole world. One room could take her as long to explore as a person would take to explore a continent. There was always something new to see and every object encountered was a wonderful discovery. Her tiny hands reached for everything she saw and a smile always brightened her face as she poked and prodded it with her tiny fingers.

When she was little, I was her rock. Everything around her could change and move, but it was my arms she longed for, my neck she cuddled against. I had the power to comfort her, feed her, keep her safe and happy. I was the magic cure to every unforeseen bump, every little bruise, every scary moment. Just knowing I was close by gave her the courage she needed to roam and learn. Looking behind her as she scampered away, she understood that she was protected. She was my heart and soul without even realizing it.

When she was little, she was my whole world. When she was little, I was alive.
