Chocolate Reward!

I got chocolate in the internal mail today!

Last week, I helped someone out by doing something I’m not responsible for doing any longer (generating a specific report) and which was supposed to have been available from a different department. I was thanked profusely for helping, which I’ve done for the last three months (these reports really were supposed to have been coming from a different system starting then). When asked how I could be repaid, I stated that chocolate would work, Caramilk specifically.

Today, I got two bars. One regular, and one Caramilk Dark! Can I tell you that in the seven years I’ve been working here, this is the FIRST time someone has come through? I’ve often helped folks out of jams – most even bigger than this one! – and when asked for means of thanking me, I have responded with a request for chocolate. It took 7 years to come across someone who actually had the integrity and honesty to stick by their word.

I will eat my chocolate with great satisfaction 🙂 This has definitely made my work week 🙂

My subjects stink

one thing about having that auto-fill option on my browsers, it pretty much shows how often I’ve used the same subject headings. sheesh. Onto the thought of this post:

On the train ride in today, I got to thinking (as I often do) about the feelings of Lemming Mentality and Activity in getting to work.

I’m up anywhere between 5am and 6am depending on how much I have to do before getting ready to go. I’m usually in the car driving Kyle to his guardian at around 7am. I usually get to the train station 7 minutes before the train arrives and get in to work anywhere between 8:40am and 9am.

I get home anywhere between 6pm and 7pm depending. Kyle usually goes to bed between 7pm and 7:30pm considering he gets up around 6:30am. Before Chantale and I have any real time together, it’s around 8pm. Due to us being up so early and going through a tiring day, we’re usually pretty wiped and can’t stay awake beyond 9:30pm.

Is it any wonder that come the weekend we are so wiped that it’s difficult to get anything accomplished? Add the need to do the regular housework and you can imagine how the weekend disappears like a sneeze.

This is living? No. This is existing. Being aware of it, however, means that when possible, action is taken to correct it. This can’t and won’t go on forever.

Happiness

Happiness is…

Snuggled on the couch with my lovely wife, watching The Animaniacs on the DVD set given to me for Xmas by my sister-in-law. Chantale had never seen Animaniacs, and now she loves it enough to learn and sing-along to the theme song! 🙂 And thus… time for a meme:

Which Animaniacs Character are You?

You have megalomaniacal impulses regularly. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, however, as you have the cranial capacity of a small planet. Trying to take over the world is hard work, though, and you’re not above exploiting your lessers. Even now, you have a plan that’s being enacted which will pitch the world’s economy into turmoil, leaving the floodgates of trade exposed for the sole owner of stock in the Pets.com company! You are en route to taking over the world!
Oh, and you ARE pondering what I’m pondering.

Life

My dad called me up this afternoon.

That alone is a warning sign. My dad NEVER calls me, or called me, in all the years I’ve lived away from home.

Turns out that my uncle – my mother’s younger and only living brother – is in the hospital dying from lung cancer. Oddly enough, the same hospital James is scheduled to have his operation on the 15th of this month.

This is the uncle whom my parents sponsored so he could come to Canada from Italy. The same uncle who practically lived with us for the first few years of my life and who later lived right across the street from us for many years after with his wife and daughters – my cousins. The same uncle who pretty much disappeared from my life when my parents moved us to our new home in St. Michel back when I was 5. Disappeared, it seems, because his wife was so jealous of that fact, that she refused to be around us any more – although whenever at a public event/ function, she would give Soap Actresses a run for their money on the fake family flair. The same uncle who – by his neglect, negligence, and abandonment – caused my mother untold years of pain and hurt.

How did she find out?

His wife called their eldest sibling (my aunt) in Italy. She called my mother this morning to tell her the news. That’s right. In case the logistics escaped you, my “aunt” called Italy from Montreal to relay the news which my aunt in Italy then called my mother (her sister) to tell her that their brother was in the hospital.

I couldn’t speak with my mother. She’s obviously very upset and distraught. And even if I did, I don’t really know what I could have told her. The only thing going through my mind right now is, “Don’t worry Mom, your Dad is gonna kick his ass when he crosses over. He’s over there waiting for him right now and he’ll definitely get an earful for treating you the way he has for all these years.” Because, really, that’s the truth of it. And in my view, this will be the last time he hurts her. As for his wife, I’ll shed no tears for her. She’ll get hers, too, one day.

Me? I lost my uncle a long time ago. I’ll always hold that image of him playing with me at 4 years old in my parents basement as a fond memory. There’s not much after that.
