Hospital Visit.

I’m sitting here trying to put my thoughts into some coherent whole in order to better relate what’s going on…

When Charlize was born, 9 days ago, the pediatrician checking her out wrote us a cardiology consult since he heard a heart murmur. Our appointment was confirmed a few days later as being today, at 1245pm to be exact. We left home at 1130am to get there (Montreal Children’s Hospital) early enough to get a hospital card made and got to our appointment right on time.

Chantale has a heart murmur, I have a heart murmur (systolic heart syndrome), and now Charlize had one. We knew an echocardiogram (ultrasound) would be done on her heart to confirm just what the pediatrician heard.

Well, as … not relaxed, but more like semi-nervous, as we were, we began to wonder just a bit more when the consult lead to the echo, which took longer than expected, to the cardiologist taking over the scan for more specific results, to being taken in for an oxygenation test, which finally led to being brought before the pediatric cardiologist holding a yellow diagram in his hand and a sombre look on his face.

A Ventricular Septal Defect (a hole between the ventricles) was confirmed. Tetralogy of Fallot to be exact.

What does this mean? Basically, in the best of cases, that during the next 6 months her oxygen blood level remains as high as it is now. And then, my little baby girl will undergo a half-day operation where her chest will be cut open so the doctors can get to her little heart and fix a number of ventricular defects. See, the way her heart is pumping now, blue blood is mixing in with her red blood which means her body isn’t getting optimal blood/ oxygen. Although it is a complex defect, it is actually quite common and once the operation is done, she will be cured. She will be able to have a normal, active, healthy life except that she’ll need periodic follow-up. I look at it in the same manner as going to the dentist once a year for a cleaning… (small smile). The only way anyone will ever know there was a problem was the fact that she will obviously have a scar on her chest.

So… she’s fine. her blood flow is good and her oxygen level is good. in the event that she suffers some kind of incident, the first symptom will be that her fingers, toes, mouth will turn blue. That’ll be our cue to call 9-1-1 and the hospital. The operation will be moved up based on how she’s doing.

This is not a disease, it is a defect. And it will not go away on its own, it needs to be fixed. After the operation, she’ll be in ICU for about 2 weeks and home recovery will be a few months of… “easier” activity. Of course, the thought of trying to keep a 6/7 month old calm and not active will be a nice challenge 🙂

I think the most difficult part, for me, will be the on-going questions of politeness. ie; “how’s the baby!” which is quite natural considering she’s 9 days old right now. “She’s fine, she’s just waiting to have open heart surgery in a few months” almost seems a little rude an answer, though…

*sigh*

We’re holding up okay. I think the fact that we’ve already had a few hours to get this jumbled mass of emotions under control helps. Plus the fact that the MCH really are good at what they do and they do have a specialist on staff who’s performed many of these surgeries. And, considering what we saw tonight, they also have a really good support system for parents. Right now the most daunting task seems to be how to “tell” everyone without freaking/ scaring them. At least the support system Chantale and I have in each other really is more than rock-hard, more than diamond-hard. We know this is just another “bump in the road” of life. And we also know HOW lucky we are considering how much worse it could have been.

Anyhow, that’s the news. Good night.

Comicopia 101

By the way, for those of you wondering if I would have been able to put Comicopia to bed with the imminent arrival of my daughter last week, wonder no more. The APA was completed and in the mail system on Saturday. Baby Daughter came on Sunday 🙂 Mail delivery only happened on Tuesday due to the holidays so… who came first? The Apa or the Baby? Depends on your point of view 😉

At any rate, here’s the last cover for our sixteenth year, a beautiful Don Newton tribute by Chuck Rhodes:

Ain’t it a beauty? 🙂

Sleep

This is a bleary-eyed post about sleep. The lack thereof, and the functioning of self in that state. If it meanders a lot, or makes no sense, then it’s just perfect. If it’s coherent, then the caffeine is doing its job quite well.

It seems that Charlize has gone through her first growth spurt already. Friday night was spent with her nursing every 90 minutes for about 30-60 minutes each time. This meant, literally, that Chantale and I slept about half an hour every 2 hours, from the time we attempted to go to bed (10pm) until we forced ourselves up (around 7am). How we managed to get through the day, I’m not sure. I did give her as much chance as possible to sleep in between family visits but it’s all just a blur. I do know that Kyle decided he wanted to go over to his grandparents so when they left, he went with them. Thus, after supper, while Charlize slept in my arms and Chantale unwound enough to nap, I watched Pirates of the Caribbean with James and Melyssa, deciding they were old enough to appreciate and enjoy it. They had a blast and so did I! I always seem to forget how much I enjoy that movie until after I’ve watched it again 🙂 They headed off to bed and I continued to watch special features for another 2 hours until about midnight when I woke Chantale. Charlize was finally awake and hungry again 🙂

Saturday night was much better than Friday, but the sleep came in bursts of about 2 hours per feeding. So, by Sunday 7am, I had slept about 6 interrupted hours. We dropped James and Melyssa off in the morning and headed over to Chantale’s parents for lunch and to pick up Kyle. Another blur of food and conversations, much of which left me scratching my head in confusion. There’s nothing like sleep deprivation and messed up sleeping patterns to really take bizarre discussions into the realm of the surreal. At one point as we were getting ready to leave, we informed everyone there that we had chosen Chantale’s sister Sylvie to be Charlize’s Godmother. We have basically kept our Best Man/ Maid of Honor roles from our Wedding into our Kids’ lives. Thus, Francisco and Sylvie will now also be Charlize’s Godparents. There’s a symmetry there that we all find very appealing. What would help round this out would be if the Pastor who performed all the ceremonies can also perform Charlize’s baptism. I’m still trying to get this organized. Anyhow, after the “reveal”, Chantale’s mother says “Well, can I be Honorary Grandmother, then?” With us (myself, Chantale, Sylvie) answering: “Uhm? Hello. You ARE her Grandmother/ Omi” (Omi being German for Grandmother). But, she insisted that she wanted a “special” title as well. By this point I was pretty sure that Flaming Sambuka I had downed when I was 12 had finally hit and it was that buzz that was making me so dizzy, so I left.

Monday turned out to be quite a rough day to go through – especially with Kyle fighting something that made him whiney and cranky all day long. Even a quick power-nap in the afternoon didn’t help. Still, we got to bed sometime after 11pm and Charlize only woke at 2:20am and was up for an hour. Thus, I got another 6 hours of sleep, but this time it was 2 naps of 3 hours 🙂

After checking in with Chantale when I got to work this morning, I ordered her to turn off all the phone ringers. I do NOT want her falling asleep only to forced awake again and again and again. And again. If there’s an emergency, I’ll call a neighbor to go check on her. Otherwise, she needs to sleep. And I’m positive there have already been phone calls made to the house by now (10am).

Breathing Time

Okay, a little breathing room. 🙂

First, I want to thank everyone for all your various words of thanks and encouragements (in a number of different formats! 🙂 ). I really appreciated your taking the time to send your well wishes and especially touched at some unexpected ones!

I’m at work today tending to my current/ ongoing projects and making sure everyone will be able to function without me while I disappear for three weeks starting the week of July 9th. One thing about the new Parental Leave Plan is that when I take it, it’s not like I’m on vacation from work. Au contraire. For that time, I’m actually not an employee of the company! Thus, besides having to pay for all my benefits (insurance, etc) ahead of time, all my accesses are revoked. So, unfortunately, if something needs my attention or someone needs my help, I can’t readily provide it.

I’m working a few days next week as well and before I know it, I’ll be experiencing something I’ve yet to! Three whole weeks at home with my family with nothing on the agenda outside of some scheduled doctor visit/ checkups while taking care of hearth and home. The idea of biking Kyle 40kms every couple of days to take him to daycare just fills me up with energy, joy, and just happiness to live something so innocent and beautiful at a pace that does NOT include rushing to catch a train! Life without worrying or relying on a CLOCK! Whoddathunkit?! 🙂

Do I have other plans? Yes and no. I do want to finish up a few more of those Reno projects still outstanding, but both money and baby/family-demands will play heavily on any decisions 🙂

For now, I’m just so grateful to be living in a Country that allows Mommies to take 52 weeks of Maternity Leave and Daddies 5 weeks of Paternity Leave without impacting each other and still having some income flow. And I have to also admit to being grateful to be working at a company where I’ve reached a certain position that allows me the flexibility of devoting necessary time to my family while still maintaining a positive workflow. 🙂

…but MAN am I looking forward to some time off!!!!! 🙂

Hanging In

Hi.

We’re still here. Contractions are still coming and they’re rather painful and unpleasant (obviously) but not enough to get us to the hospital.

If all else fails, we’re checking in on Monday at 7am. Hence the reason for the radio silence 🙂

In the meantime, here’s our first little cutie, caught in the act of asking “Pleeease” 🙂

Short Post

Just a quick pop-in note to state that I had a really nice weekend 🙂

Saturday, I put the finishing touches on the baby room and it felt REALLY good to do so 🙂 (On Sunday morning, we quickly ran through Ikea as well to get some hooks and ended up coming back with a print as well, and both were put up and greatly enhanced the room, too! There are pictures ready to be uploaded which I suspect Chantale will do later today. I’ll post a link when they’re ready 🙂 )

Sunday, Father’s Day, was very nice, too 🙂 No baby, though, which was almost expected 🙂 Heck, my initial guess was today but that doesn’t seem to be happening either. Baby seems very comfortable where she is. We’ll see what the Doc says tomorrow.

Chantale, Kyle, and I headed out to pick up James and Melyssa yesterday morning (and you should have seen that happy look/ grin/ shriek that came out of Kyle when he saw them and they hopped into the car 🙂 He definitely loves his older siblings 🙂 ). On our way home, we stopped off at IGA to grab some very good munchies and proceeded to have ourselves a very wonderful brunch 🙂 Later, while Kyle napped and Chantale rested, James and I read comics in the kitchen 🙂 Melyssa, obviously totally enamored of her new room, read there after she had gone biking for a bit.

At 3pm, Chantale’s parents and sister came over just as Kyle was waking from his nap. The next couple of hours were spent chatting, relaxing, having pie and ice cream, and watching Donald Duck 🙂 (Kyle’s latest film of fancy is: The Three Caballeros 🙂 ) A quick bath after supper and we piled into the car to drive James and Melyssa back.

The rest of the evening passed rather quickly and before I knew it midnight was getting closer and closer and I had to force myself off the computer. With Comicopia’s deadline this week, I was getting the editorials put together and prepping the material I’ve received to date. Actually, that just reminded me that I have to go get the back cover printed up! Whoops! 🙂

Looking at the next couple of weeks has gotten me a little starry-eyed. A new baby, 5 weeks of Paternity Leave, summer visitation with J&M, a visit up north for some blueberry picking, Chantale and my 4th Wedding Anniversary, etc, etc… SO much to look forward to!! 🙂

Another quick one…

A few things to say…

First off, had a hell of a fun time reading (finally!) all those Paradise Comics/ Shuster Awards reviews! Thanks to Bryan Munn for pointing out “Sequential // Canadian Comix News & Culture” (http://sequential.spiltink.org) and especially their Paradise Con reports. Also thanks to for pointing out her own review (beware, photo heavy!)

The spiltink summary of links led me to a ton of photos and other long reviews from both fans and pros. As I know there are many other Canadian fans/pros here, I’ve created an LJ feed for it. You can add it to your reading list via: .

And speaking of feeds, another friend, Janet Hetherington, has finally gone the blog route as well 🙂 Again, as she’s on blogspot, I created an LJ feed for her here. You can add it to your reading list via:

Thanks for the many hours of enjoyment, folks! 🙂

What to say… what to say…

You know that “brain going all over the place” feeling? Yeah, that’s me. Or should I say that’s still me. 🙂 A couple of folks I’ve spoken with recently made comments in regards to my “calm” at life while the world bubbles madly around me. I just laugh and shrug, mainly because regardless of all that life throws my way or that I throw myself into by choice, it has *nothing* on the stress of going through a life reconstruction. In other words, considering what I went through during the tail end of 98 and most of 99, there isn’t anything that’s come remotely close to it. Yes, I definitely do know of things which *could* be worse, but so far (knock wood) it’s not a reality I have to contemplate.

So, when I get an email from my buddy Mark Shainblum stating: “So let me get this straight. You’re…
A) Expecting a baby any second, perhaps one of the most stressful things anyone can ever go through
B) Renovating your house, perhaps the second or third most stressful thing anyone can go through
C) Producing an APA
D) Writing your own, massive section of said APA
E) Working a fulltime job (leading a team of 8 developers)
You’re a mutant, and your mutant power is the ability to turn stress into chicken soup. It’s the only explanation.”

I can only laugh and laugh and laugh 🙂 Especially when Chantale chimes in with: “AND a FULL TIME Father!”

Baby Due? June 19th. Apa Deadline? June 20th. My target mailing date? June 23rd. How will all this change when the baby arrives? Stay toooooned! 🙂
