Educational System

It’s always sad and yet never surprising when I read articles like New Teachers get Rude Awakening. It’s sad how the stress of being a teacher and teacher attrition is pointed at as being the reason so many of them leave the profession. This, outside of the so-called fact that teaching salaries really are quite low.

My problem with all this? It’s not for the teachers OR the school board to raise OUR kids. It’s THEIR job to TEACH them. It’s OUR job to RAISE them. Part of that “raising” is enforcing the fact that knowledge and school is not their right, it’s their PRIVILEDGE. Kids who go to school just to waste their time, shoot the shit, get into trouble, and then get the fuck out have no right being in school. Their parents should be the ones enforcing proper behaviour at school. Detentions and Principal’s Office visits are not thing to be laughed at, they are things that should be feared. Feared in the same kind of dreaded sense that if that happens at school, something much worse will happen at home.

Too many kids don’t care about school and feel very free to mouth off whenever and however they want. Teacher can’t touch them, but oh yeah they can touch and hurt the teachers. The “rights” of a child not being punished or abused by their teachers has come at the expense of the Teachers own rights to NOT be punished or abused by their students.

Spare the rod and spoil the child has turned into touch my child and your ass is in jail. The result? Lack of respect for your elders, lack of respect for authority and authority figures, and more hoodlums being taught how to work the system to their benefit when they’re young and then use it against others when they’re older.

It seems that the longer the human race has to live and extend their lives, the longer and more often they use that time to do evil unto others. How mind-shattering is it to hear/read/see that even in the midst of the devastation of New Orleans, you have gangs going around raping women? Can you imagine being a woman who has just barely survived the destruction of your city -probably losing family along with your possessions- only to be attacked and raped? Where in God’s name do men/people/HUMANS find the lack of human decency in the black pit of their souls to DO such harm?

Some days I really just fucken hate the world and society we live in.

Reading Recommendation Request

Greetings everyone. I have a simple request. Can you recommend an LJ or a community worth reading? There’s so many lj community weeds to rip through that some days it’s not worth the effort and is just easier to ask who/what are you all reading and why? Thanks!

Christopher Walken 2008

Christopher Walken 2008

“Our great country is in a terrible downward spiral. We’re outsourcing jobs, bankrupting social security, and losing lives at war. We need to focus on what’s important– paying attention to our children, our citizens, our future. We need to think about improving our failing educational system, making better use of our resources, and helping to promote a stable, safe, and tolerant global society. It’s time to be smart about our politics. It’s time to get America back on track.”

I love this guy. Probably because I can’t ever get his characters out of my mind and I think having a spooky President would be a cool thing 🙂 But then again, that’s just me. I’m a Canadian and don’t have to worry about Presidents. The politics here are screwed up enough as it is, but at least we’re not “out there” alienating the rest of the world with the chip on our shoulders. Nope. We’re peacekeepers. You got a problem? We’ll break out the beer and back bacon and iron it out during a Hockey game… 🙂

Webbing It.

Seems I haven’t been able to get the web lure off of me today. 🙂 After some cleaning up of files and photos on my computer, I realized I wanted to tweak a few things. And thus, I’ve put up a slew of pictures just now.

First, you’ll see a montage of Melyssa and Casey photographs over on my Parenting Page.

Secondly, a montage of a large number of photographs I took at the Paradise Comics Toronto Comicon 2005 convention can be found from the Convention link over at the Savage Land. Seeing the convention pages makes me cringe at the fact that they definitely need a facelift as well (plus, I’m missing a number of convention pics!). At any rate, right now the important thing was to put up the pictures that accompanied my PCTCC 2005 Convention Venture Report found on my Savage Enterprises Publishing page.

Hope you all enjoy the pics! Outside of the obvious family photos, I’m especially happy to have that photograph of myself with Jerry Robinson, along with the one of myself and JMS! 🙂

Phew.

I was inspired tonight to revamp a website that’s been in need of a facelift for quite a number of years now. After a good and solid 7 hours on it, I got it into a state I was very happy with. All that was left was to inform the President of the company and get his feedback. I’m happy to report that upon his first click-throughs, he was suitably impressed 🙂 He’ll spend some time going through the site in its entirety and requesting any modifications he might want. After that, we’ll update the main links and then I’ll be free to publish the url 🙂

Invoice all printed up an a nice little sum going into the Savage Enterprises Publishing coffers… which basically helps pay for some of the web hosting services I’ve been using 🙂 What a circular world it is…

Just so.

New Day.

So it’s a new month. How’s it looking for all of you? I’ve got a feeling it will be quite an interesting one, personally. We’ll have to see how it plays out. Yesterday I was mercilessly tracked by a head-hunter. Wow. Something like 7 phone calls and one email until he got a hold of me. Exciting stuff but nothing concrete for now. Still, makes the old brain cells go “hmmm…”

For those interested in seeing those amazing 15th Anniversary covers that Gabriel Morrissette did for Comicopia, just head out to Comicopia.net and click on the Year 15 covers from the menu.

And for those who don’t already know, Chantale has put up quite a number of new pictures of Kyle (including Sunday’s Baptism) over on her website. Head out to The Lady of the Lake dot Org and go see for yourself 🙂

As for me, it’s Stats Day on top of so many other prep work for this weekend. And so, adieu.

Kicking around

Got an email yesterday letting me know when my Fast Fiction pieces were scheduled to go online. Cool. Gave me the urge to finish up the other stuff I”m working on. Actually, as I explained to Ceri earlier this week… no, last week… holey moley where does the time go?… Anyways, as I explained to her over coffee, this upcoming weekend my family is going up to Lac St. Jean to celebrate many Turgeon anniversaries (for example, my father-in-law turns 50, his father turns 75, Chantale’s uncle turns 40, her cousin turns 20, etc). Add to that the fact that it will be Kyle’s first trip up north means it’s going to be a great family event.

I, unfortunately, have to miss it. I can’t put into words how upset this makes me. So, let’s not go there. Instead, let’s concentrate on what I’ll be doing this weekend.

Considering I’ll be spending it either at work or at home hanging out with my puppy, it’s a given I’ll be in front of the computer a lot. To that end, I’ll be working on Comicopia (articles to write, editorials to prepare for next issue -yes i know it’s 2 months from now, and mailing comments to express). I’ll be putting the final editing touches on The Mysterious Minute-Men Year Three (finally putting right the 13th episode) and The Mysterious Minute-Men Spotlights & Specials (finally putting right the second C.J. spotlight). Then, with the 5 compilations in hand, I’ll begin working on a distribution strategy and cost analysis. Two other projects I’d like to complete would be a final review of the second NaNo Novel and some final re-edits on Corrupted Memories.

Seems like a lot but will really only take a couple of hours at most. Maybe 2/3 hours a day. Of course, this also means I’ll end up tweaking the Scarelet Rose Productions website as well to see if I like the new look…

Keeping busy is good. Especially overly-busy so you don’t think about who and what you’re missing…

Interests Meme

Yoinked from

Look at your LJ “interests” list. If you have fewer than 50 interests, pick every fifth one. If you have between fifty and seventy-five interests, pick every seventh one. If you have over seventy-five interests, pick every tenth one. If you have fewer than ten, pick all of ’em. List them here, and tell everyone exactly what it is about these things that interests you so much.

I’ve got 91 listed, so it’s every 7th, making 13…

babylon 5 – Mankind’s last best hope… and the best damned television series made to date. How can you not love a series that’s written like a real Book? 🙂

callahans crosstime saloon – Anyone not familiar with Spider Robinson’s amazing book is really missing out on a hell of a great read. This book had a huge impact on me and brought much happiness and memories over the years, including meeting and hanging out with the Robinsons a couple of times. The most memorable being the Primedia convention of 97 and sitting on stage between him and his wife, recording his mini concert (Spider Robinson’s Lonely Hearts Club Band) 🙂

chocolate – do I really have to explain this? 🙂

cooking – The joys of eating food you prepared yourself is only second to the joys of watching those you love enjoy a meal you prepared for them. Nourishment and warmth, wrapped up in a hug of love 🙂

exploited – Gee whiz. Look at my icon. The Exploited were the first hardcore punk band to grab my attention and definitely helped get me through the 80’s 🙂

hudson hawk – Bruce Willis, Danny Aiello, Andie MacDowell, Cappucino, and a totally WHACKY adventure! This movie gave me so many kicks that I couldn’t help love it. Only Bruce could pull it off and if you don’t get it, then you don’t get it.

lord of the rings – To me, it was the first universe created in its entirety in one man’s mind… and it was incredible.

nanowrimo – Another given. Considering what came out of my taking the challenge these last couple of years – both in friendships and in pure writing output – how could I not love it?

quantum leap – Second chances at life/ happiness, time travelling, great characters, wonderful storylines… what’s not to like?

savage land – The world where it all began in my own mind.

sleeping naked – I hate being restricted while I sleep. Maybe being stuck in a straightjacket a few lifetimes ago did it to me… but there’s nothing better than cool sheets on your body to make you sleep well… (outside of a warm body, of course 🙂 )

the godfather – One of my earliest memories is going to see this movie with my parents at an Italian theatre. Family. Great acting. Family. Snippets of life in Italy. Connect the dots.

wwiv – The Savage Land BBS ran on WWIV. The best dial-up system around 🙂
