Fast Fiction Time

Ah. A little better 🙂 Sleep helps.

[Fast Fiction: The Morning Commute – January 30, 2006]

Angie sat cowering in the corner of the Train shelter. All around her, commuters were chatting excitedly, some whispering, some yelling. No one paid attention to her.

She hugged her legs to her chest, wiping her eyes on her knees. She avoided all eye contact whenever someone looked her way and that kept them from questioning her. She didn’t have anything to tell them at any rate, she just wanted to be left alone. If someone started to get too close, she would shrink in on herself and look away at the floor until they moved away.

“Someone should really DO something about this!” said one man angrily, pointing towards the security guards preventing the passengers from getting on board.

“What is this? The second this month?” answered his friend. “This is seriously screwed up.”

Angie jumped up at that comment and ran over to them, tears streaming down her face. She couldn’t take it any more. “It’s not my fault!” she screamed at them, making them flinch. “You think I wanted this?” she yelled at their retreating forms. “I didn’t want to do it! It was an accident! I didn’t jump, I was pushed!”

But no one was listening…

Fast Fiction: The Purchase

I just realized how long it’s been since I did one of these… must explain why I’m feeling rusty…
update 01/31:I had to get rid of that last sentence since it stopped everything short. I think the new one works better.

[Fast Fiction: The Purchase – January 27, 2006]

Jaimie was used to making unusual purchases. Being highly successful meant she never had to worry about a price tag and being single meant she was used to buying gifts for herself.

“We guarantee that this is just like the real thing,” explained the saleslady. “You know up-front where your money goes with this model. It’ll only stop working when you do,” she smiled.

Jaimie furrowed her brow. Had it really come to this? Had her years of being alone finally driven her to purchasing what she couldn’t find?

“I prefer it myself. It’s there when you need it, and you can ignore it when you don’t. None of that ‘building-relationship’ crap. Why wait for them to leave you? This won’t,” she finished pointing to the merchandise.

Jaimie hated that “R” word. She couldn’t stand to work on relationships – who had the time? Plus, the rewards never felt real enough. So, why shouldn’t she get a mechanical replacement if it made life easier?

Jaimie nodded and the saleslady smiled.

“Congratulations. You’ve just bought yourself a Best Friend for life! Amy is fully designed to be there for you. Shop, talk, dress, cry… whatever! Batteries not included.”

Cookie Cutter

It seems the best way to bypass this cookie issue is to update your journal/ log-in. So, that’s what I’m doing even though I don’t have much to say. 4 items of note for today:

  • Kyle gets his 6-month vaccination shots tonight. I hope he doesn’t get any adverse reactions to them… I have a late meeting tomorrow which means I can’t get home early as I normally would and help out…
  • My hotel reservations are made for April 28/30th for the Paradise Comics Toronto Comicon (and Shuster Awards!) We’ll be staying at the Toronto Travelodge Dowtown West.
  • I picked up the latest QuickTax today so I guess we can begin getting our tax returns ready. Time to pay the reaper…
  • I picked up the Golden Age Flash Archives #2 today… the first DC Archive book I’ve bought in close to 5 years…

    That’s it for now.

    Random Thoughts

Because my brain is jumping around so much lately… Heck, today a friend of mine called me up after a meeting we were in together to ask if I was okay because I looked like hell. And here I was thinking that out of all the recent work days, I was probably best today…

  • If someone’s questioning their beliefs, it’s called a Crisis of Faith… so what if you’re questioning your career? is it a Crisis of Career? Crisis of Job? or just Crisis of Life?
  • I read another funny Harper Demon quote today. This time it’s from Michael Moore: “Maybe it’s a new form of Canadian irony – reverse irony! OK, now I get it. First, you have the courage to stand against the war in Iraq – and then you elect a prime minister who’s for it. You declare gay people have equal rights – and then you elect a man who says they don’t. You give your native peoples their own autonomy and their own territory – and then you vote for a man who wants to cut aid to these poorest of your citizens. Wow, that is intense!”
  • First round picks for the Shuster Awards have been given in. Now we wait for the other 6 judges to hand in their nominations and we go for Round Two to confirm which Creators will be on the final voting ballot.
  • I’ve sent in a number of suggestions for improvements/ changes to the Shuster Awards in terms of making the judging part of it easier for both the judges and seeing the works in discussion. I hope some of them are accepted as I (obviously) want this award to truly mean something in Canada.

Simply because it’s been a while and there are new readers to this blog:

  • My 3 Fast Fiction pieces from last year on Science Fiction Fantasy Horror dot Com can be found by clicking the following title names: Tight Budgets, The New Girl, and Marvin Knows. All stories now have a “comments” section.
  • 13 more days before my next vacation… days of lounging around at Grandma’s house in Lac St. Jean… doing nothing but eating, sleeping, reading, and chill-axing with Chantale’s Grandparents, Chantale, Kyle, and Casey the Wonder Puppy…

    Harper Demon

Warren Ellis’ BadSignal cracked me up this morning. Here’s part of what he had to say in regards to Harper’s victory in Canada: “Doesn’t Stephen Harper look like the kind of actor a US or US-but-produced-in-Canada TV show uses as the bad guy when they can’t afford a British actor? … You know the kind of guy. Grey hair, so white you can practically see through his skin into his circulatory system, with the kind of unblinking half-glower that let’s you know that no matter what he’s talking about, he’s actually thinking about shoving pregnant lesbians tits-first into a woodchipper. … Paul Martin should never have let on that he was desperate. And now he’s in the bin and you’re ruled by the guy who plays Creepy Vice-President in Sci-Fi Channel shows…”

And I laughed because every time I’ve seen Harper on the news, all I can say is: “How can you trust that face? He’s DAMIEN!” Some people, you can’t tell they have a hidden agenda. With this guy, it’s hidden right on his face.

Remember all, this is my personal belief. I don’t like him, I don’t trust him. And before you wonder, no, I don’t trust any of the other leaders either. Because a Leader would (a) Take Responsibility for the poor actions of those under his leadership and make amends (which Martin didn’t do), and (b) Lead by Example and that doesn’t mean insulting the other teams (which Ducie defnitely did, often). I won’t make any cracks about Layton because I don’t know a thing about him.

“And that’s all I have to say about that” – Forrest Gump

    On a lighter note…

Kyle Ethan turned 6 months old yesterday. Wow. It’s such an amazing feeling having him in our lives that the only analogy I can give you is this: if you could bottle up the amount of love and happiness he brings to us (that’s not just me, but Chantale, James, and Melyssa) you would have enough energy to dwarf the sun. Funny thing about yesterday was that he woke up with such a huge appetite it felt like an on-going battle to keep him fed! He just ate and ate the whole time loudly proclaiming “MMMMMMM!!!” white seated in his high chair 🙂 And then, even though he took a nap after his “swimming” class, he took another 4-hour nap throughout the evening! But then, after 90 minutes, he was so exhausted he fell back to sleep and did not get up until 6am. Woah.

One really fun thing I did with him was at lunch, while I was eating a canteloupe (amazed at how juicy and refreshing it was) I held a slice to him and he immediately took to it and both chewed and sucked 🙂 I don’t think I would have given it to him if I had known that you’re only supposed to give kids canteloupe at 12 months, but considering how much he enjoyed it (and squealed for more!), I’m glad I did 🙂 Unfortunately, no photos were taken, but the image of him happily nibbling at the slice will stay with me for a long time 🙂

And on that happy note, I’ll try to move away from the gloom of the last few posts.

    Positive Action

Early last week, I was on the train going home and had another one of those encounters where you see someone realize they missed their stop. This kind of stuff happens often and it always irritated me because it seemed like such a simple solution that I didn’t understand why – in the 3+ years I’ve been taking the train – it’s never been done. Well, that was enough. I got home, told Chantale about it, and then sent off an email to the AMT with my name and phone number. Here’s what I said:

    Mike Aragona, January 10, 2006 21:18
Subject : Announcing Stations – Please Help

Hello. I’m a commuter on the Dorgion-Vaudreuil line and I would like to make a suggestion.

I feel it is very important for there to be an announcement indicating not only the NEXT train station, but the CURRENT train station. In other words, instead of just announcing “Prochaine Arret, Next Stop —-” right after the train leaves a station, it should ALSO say “Gare —, —- Station!” whenever it arrives, as the doors open.

This small gesture would go a LONG way towards improving the quality of life of many commuters. There are a lot of us who leave Lucien Lallier after a hard day’s work and are so exhausted we can’t always concentrate on where we are. When you add the fact that the stations aren’t well lit and we can’t see the signs in the dark when we’ve stopped, and it’s easy to get confused.

Just tonight, the woman next to me realized she missed her stop as the train left the station and the announcer stated that the next stop was Beaconsfield. She got up to leave and would have to make her way back to the station some how. Adults have to make do, but as I also got up and moved to another part of the train, I saw a young school kid suddenly realize that the train was LEAVING Beaconsfield, grabbed his bags and ran for the door, but it was too late. Frustrated and afraid, he started crying as the train made its way to the next stop. I would hate to be his father and worry as to why he wasn’t home on time after school.

This is not the Metro system. There isn’t a train heading in the opposite direction every 5 to 10 minutes. It is really important that commuters know where they are as the consequences could be quite dire for them.
Please, PLEASE take this request seriously. A response would really be appreciated. Thank you.

The next day, I got a letter back that seemed somewhat of a “form”. Simply that “We wish to inform you that train station announcements must be made at least once aboard our commuter trains but rest assured that we have taken note of your suggestion and transferred it to the appropriate authorities.” It then listed other ways of contacting the AMT and their hours of operation. I was a little upset but hoped the “appropriate authorities” really would get the letter.

Monday, going home, I got a very pleasant surprise. Made me happy. I wanted to write to them, but didn’t. Last night, on a different train, the same smile played about my face. This time, I did write, quoting the same email ticket number. Here’s what I said:

“Hello again. I took the 4:30pm train home on Monday, and the 6pm train home yesterday. Let me tell you that I was VERY happy to hear all the station announcements upon arrival at each station!
Thank you so much for taking my request seriously and actually implementing it. I know it will help many commuters and I really appreciate what you’ve done.
    Thank you again!”

All things considered, it was a minor change with a major impact. I’m still surprised it wasn’t done earlier, but then again maybe they never had the idea. At any rate, I’m glad they’re doing it and I hope they continue to do so. If there’s anyone else who takes the Dorion-Rigaud line, it would probably be a nice thing to email them and let them know you appreciate the “new” service 🙂

    Back

We got back home last night at around 9:30pm. A two-day round-trip to Toronto/Guelph for a funeral totalling over 22 hours in a car, driving in some pretty rotten weather left us all physically and emotionally exhausted. Kyle was a real trouper and no one can fault his finally having had enough at around 7pm last night. After a really deep sleep last night, he was in great spirits this morning. I finally got over 3 hours straight sleep after 3 nights of 1 to 2 hour rotational naps.

Today, back at work. Brain not fully functioning. After all we went through this week, it’s really difficult to get back in the swing of things. Plus, I miss my family something terribly fierce…

    Finding the words

As some of you know, Chantale’s uncle passed away yesterday. He was her mother’s younger brother, aged 46. The way it happened is another story altogether but the main point is… he’s gone. Now, his two sons (14 and 10) are left without a dad. He’ll never get to see them graduate, get their driver’s license, bring home their first girlfriends, or a million other things dad’s normally get to do with their kids. Sure, he’ll be “there”, watching from the other side, but there’s quite a big difference between being “there” and being “here, now” if you know what I mean.

The family’s having a rough time dealing with everything but the pieces are finally falling into place. There will be an exposition on Monday, a cremation on Tuesday, and a service on Wednesday. Chantale’s parents are driving to Guelph tomorrow and will be back on Thursday. It’s a little more difficult on us in terms of logistics so we’re still not sure what we’re going to do.

The last time we saw him was back in August. It was about the third time the family had come down for a visit since our Wedding back in 2003. Obviously, I’ve only known them for a few years but I got along well with them and enjoyed our chats. I was especially proud of the fact that I had gained his respect in regards to how hard I had fought to still be an integral part of James and Melyssa’s lives after my divorce in 1999. As he had put it, it’s usually so much easier to let it go. The fact that I didn’t let them go made me a man in his eyes.

It’s quite sad. I’ve been strong for everyone since the news came even though it ripped me up to see my wife, her sister, and her mother so (literally) torn up about it all. We had gone over to her parents last night and stayed there till past midnight. After we got home, we didn’t get to bed until about 2am, obviously making for a rough morning. They’re all coping in their own way and although it’s been touch-and-go with Chantale today, it’s been mostly good. So, that leaves me free to finally let the pain in. Big boys might not cry, but Men accept the fact that we’re entitled to hurt, too.

Here’s a picture of him (in the center) with his oldest son on his right, hugging my father-in-law on his left. This was taken in August 2003 at my Wedding reception.

Good-bye Joerg Heinze. For obvious reasons, you’ll never be forgotten.
