Fiction: Tu Sei

[ Fiction: Tu Sei – December 21, 2006]

It didn’t take long for the pigeons to arrive.

Phil sat on his regular park bench, clearing the new-fallen snow out from under his seat and the spot on his right. His getting comfortable and opening up his bag full of seeds, seemed to have been the signal they had all been waiting for.

Phil snickered as they all cooed and clucked, landing at this feet with the braver ones landing on the bench beside him.

“Missed me, have you?” he smiled, causing those closest to him to jump away.

“I didn’t realize it had been so long,” he continued, scooping up a handful of seeds and tossing them to the ground.

He watched as they pecked at the seeds, clucking and jumping over each other.

“I didn’t really think I’d be back here,” he admitted as he looked at the seeds in his hands, rolling them in his palms. “Half a year has gone by since my last visit but I’m only here because my doctors say it’s the best way to recover and try to integrate myself back into society.”

He dropped the seeds and reached into the bag for more.

“It’s a good thing bird seed doesn’t rot, hm?” he tried smiling again but found it a little painful. Trembling, he let his hand drop back into the bag. “This is harder than I thought,” he admitted to himself, rubbing his eyes with his left hand.

He wiped a tear from his eye and looked at the birds. His right hand continued to grab at the seeds in the bag, digging deeper and deeper. His fingers felt something under the seeds and he pulled it out slowly. It was an envelope.

With trembling hands, he opened it as carefully as he could and stared at the card inside. A partridge on a pear tree smiled back at him. He opened it up and read the card. “Please don’t leave the pigeons alone. I’ll be there with you in spirit, but they still need you now. All my love, Gladys”

Phil bent forward and cried. When he had exhausted himself, he straightened up again and blew his nose. “I love you, Gladys,” he said to the card. “Merry Christmas.”

The pigeons cooed and continued pecking for seeds. Phil was in no rush to leave.

Stuff

Well, I had “stuff” to say, but now I’ve suddenly gone a little mind-blank… I guess I’ll stick to 3 comic related items.

1- My 100 reviews in 100 days is coming to a close over in my off_the_rack quick-review blog. How sweet is it that #100 falls on my last day of work before Xmas vacation (friday!)? I could not have planned it better. Long live serendipity and synchronicity! 🙂

2- Comicopia deadline for issue 98 is WEDNESDAY. This means, of course, lots of running around – collecting zines, printing them up, getting the covers done, etc etc. I’m thinking of changing the deadlines around a bit so I don’t have to keep doing this the week before xmas every year!! 🙂

3- The Joe Shuster Canadian Comic Awards has picked up gear as I’m in the process of contacting/ confirming the Members of the Nominating Panel for 2006. Two have been definitely confirmed (one from Ontario, one from Quebec) and I’m waiting to hear back from the others. In the meantime, I’ve also contacted a couple of publishers for sample review copies that can be mailed out to the Members for consideration of their 2006 work. The Hall of Fame illustration is also being worked on and I’m looking forward to the collaborative end result!

All in all, plenty to keep me busy for a while. Of course, the most important deadline I have in the coming weeks is the finishing up of the Translation/ Edits of one of my client’s books (as I’ve mentioned before, there’s potentially 4 other books awaiting translation). It’s actually a lot harder going than I expected. After all, it’s not “pure” French, it’s “Quebec” French which also includes slang…

Private Entry Now Public!

Hello 🙂 As I was scanning through my LJ for stuff to share in Comicopia, I came across a Private Post that I made back on October 20th. It was always posted with the intention of one day opening it up publically. I’ve just done that 🙂

So, if you want to read about how I found out Chantale was pregnant… head over to my post entitled Baby! (http://savageknight.livejournal.com/258511.html) 🙂

Rockin’ around the xmas tree…

I’ve been up since 4am. Don’t ask me how I’m feeling or I’ll just have to kick you.

Our Xmas decorations are all up. This weekend, I finally got out that long ladder I borrowed from my father in law and climbed up to the roof to hang the white icicle lights. Very nice effect. I suddenly thought quite highly of how pretty it all looks at night.

Our tree this year is the artificial one we use whenever I get James and Melyssa for New Year’s. (on the year’s they’re with me for Xmas, we always get a real tree). However, this little blue spruce (heh. little is relative. it used to be quite large in our old apartment. it’s little in this house, especially in comparison to the 7 foot tree I got last year… ;)) is beautiful. Chantale put a lot of work into making things look great and we all helped out. We absolutely love it and the very personal decorations/ ornaments we hang.

Kyle has been extremely good with the tree and ornaments! Considering it’s the first year he’s able to fully appreciate them, he has mostly kept his hands to himself. But he loves going around the tree and pointing to the ornaments he loves the best (Frosty, Bert, Ernie, The Count, Winnie, etc). This morning, he was circling the tree as he often does with his hand out (think of someone trying to feed a wild animal or something – palm out) and saying “Itsaball” “Itsaball!” as he walked by each ball at his height. This came from? Him pointing and saying “Ball!” and having Chantale or I say to him, “Yes, sweetie, it’s a ball”. How incredibly sweet and adorable is that? 🙂

Another cute thing? Whenever he wants us to light up the tree, he’ll say “C’est beau!” so we can turn on the lights and go “Ahhh!” 🙂

I love that little guy so much… 🙂

Time for GOOD News!

Okay, I’m going to make it official! Some of you already know this, but most of you don’t. So, without further ado, let me present…

The newest addition to the Aragona-Turgeon clan! 🙂 That’s right, you read correctly, Chantale is pregnant again 🙂 This little bundle of joy will be joining us by the end of June 2007 🙂 This ultrasound was for the 12 week preventative checkup. The full 3-D (or Jack Kirby Ultrasound as I like to refer to it 🙂 ) will be forthcoming in February 🙂

In the meantime… rejoice! A new child comes! 🙂 I’m going to be a father again! 🙂

One of those days…

Okay. This day can end, really.

Started it with a report that confirmed certain observations I have had about disengagement which will cause extra work in the coming months.

Then, made a phone call that confirmed a certain something I wanted could not be filled by me.

Then, I spoke with my mom who was in a panic over my sister. Her father-in-law is on his death bed and she and her husband are rushing around town today to get all they need to fly off to Bangladesh and hopefully see him before he passes. Mom didn’t know about Melyssa so when I told her she did the usual Italian cursing.

Melyssa called to tell me they had moved her room and that she was being released today at 4pm. She really wanted me to go see her but I had something I couldn’t change and told her I would try to do so later. Thus, at 2pm I managed to get a friend of mine to drop me off at the hospital. It was going to be a nice visit and I had even brought along the little monkey stuffie she was supposed to get as a gift at the party on Sunday. I got there at 2:30pm to find that… she had been released at 2pm.

I make my way back to work and call the house – not there yet – call the cell – she’s at the pharmacy getting a prescription filled. She’s going to have to go to an Asthma clinic to get checked out and on top of that, on Monday (the 18th – ironically the same day James is supposed to be operated -to be confirmed tomorrow) she has to go get tested for cystic fibrosis. I guess her lungs really took a beating in this latest attack. I’ll know more when they get home and her mother can call me back.

Seriously, I’m quite fed up of this year. I’m ready for it to end now.

I apologize for my moaning, I just needed to get it off my chest and post it for posterity.

Edited to add: I got off the phone and it looks like another possible battle will begin regarding our having Casey. Melyssa was bawling on the phone telling me she doesn’t want Casey to go but that the doctors said she has to. I told her that Casey has been with us for 3 years and she’s part of the family. She’s not to blame and isn’t going anywhere. I spoke with her mother and she’s a bit “huffed” at not knowing what to do but that comes from having spent the last 2 years trying to figure out how to treat Melyssa. For example, when she was taking Singular daily, she was doing well. So well that in May of last year, the Doc said to change the dosage to every other day in an effort to possibly take her off it. Doofus. Singular is a 24-hour pill. What good is going 48 hours on it? Idiot. Anyhow, we’re supposed to go to the Asthma Clinic to discuss “options” because it seems that after all these years of having a child with asthma, having a wife with asthma, having a sister-in-law with asthma, having friends with asthma, that I don’t know what it means. Yeah, right.

The test for cystic fibrosis is something that is asked for all patients who suffered as severely as Melyssa did this weekend. It’s scheduled for Monday at 11am. And as for James… well, you guessed it. Moved. January 15, 2007. This time, however, we have a time (7:00am) as well as instructions on what to bring and what to do (for example, fasting for 12 hours). This is a little closer to reality, then.

I’m tempted to say “stick a fork in me, I’m done” but considering the day…

Fumes

just running on fumes…

I wanted to update on the weekend, but really, outside of spending Saturday continuing renovations and putting up the tree, followed by a Sunday seeing Santa with Kyle and James (along with seeing a LOT of co-workers from DPM), what was there?

Oh yeah. The worst asthma attack Melyssa’s suffered through in her 9 years of life.

She’s been having a bit of a tough time the last couple of weeks, but then on Sunday she woke up with a cold and needed her pump regularly. She was not well enough to go see Santa so she stayed home to sleep while Chantale helped her dad with the wiring in the new room in the basement. When we got home from the party, she wasn’t doing too well and as we started getting ready to leave, she got worse. Pretty soon, she was crying and screaming for help as she couldn’t breathe. Chantale immediately took control, working to get her to focus and try some breathing exercises along with taking her pumps. After several minutes, she was better, and so we again attempted to get dressed. Considering how bad the attack was, we weren’t headed back to her mother’s, we were heading to the hospital.

We never got a chance to get dressed as she fell into another attack and nothing was working this time. No choice but to call 9-1-1 and try to keep her conscious while the EMTs got there and immediately hooked her up to an oxygen mask. They were really great and the lead, Nancy, helped calm Melyssa down. After the medication, we continually monitored her as her blood/oxygen level was finally good. But, we still needed to go to the hospital. Chantale went into the ambulance with Melyssa and they started up another dosage.

I called Melyssa’s mother and she left to meet them at the hospital. Chantale called her parents who would come to watch Kyle. They all left and I got Kyle ready for bed. He drank his milk but this time did not want to be put in his crib. He would start crying and kicking immediately. I knew what this meant: he needed to be held and comforted so that’s what I did. 5 minutes later, he was finally slumbering and I put him down. It was just at that time that Chantale’s parents showed up so James and I got in the car and headed over to St. Justine’s.

We found where Melyssa was being kept for observation and as James and I walked over there, a thought kept going through my head. Melyssa would be there… with my Wife and my ex-wife in the same room. Hooo boy. Happily, it turned out to be a calm scene and we chatted briefly. Melyssa was high as a kite on oxygen and just cracked me up 🙂 Being that they were going to be there for a while, Chantale and I left, expecting them to release Melyssa after the next hour’s rounds (usual verification of blood/oxygen).

We got home and pretty much collapsed. It was the worst attack we’ve ever experienced and, really, if the ambulance hadn’t gotten there, it could have been disasterous…

This morning, we tried to get an update. Couldn’t find her. Chantale finally tracked them down in the hospital. Although her blood/oxygen level was good, her lung capacity/strength wasn’t. Thus, she was admitted and stayed there overnight. She’s also staying there tonight.

And now, I’m heading off. I borrowed a bus pass from a co-worker and am going for a quick visit. I’ll update later if I can.
