A Moment for Les

About a week an a half ago, I had a dream that I was escorting what I like to refer to as celebrity dignitaries. Basically, I was the equivalent of a “man in black” and it was my job to accompany a wonderful older gentleman – all smiles, laughters, and jokes, and his wife – also elder, statuesque, beautiful voice, held herself tall like a chorus girl.

We were staying at an “old” hotel where the gentleman was scheduled to appear in his comedy routine – his finale forever. I sat with his wife in the balcony as the audience roared with laughter and appreciation. Afterwards, I remember watching the two of them (from the hotel balcony) as they approached a white stretch limo. As the door opened and they stood there waving at the adoring crowd – streamers and balloons floating all around them – it began to rain softly.

The gentleman smiled broadly and held out his hands to his wife. She smiled, looked up at me, closed her eyes as the rain fell across her face, and she broke out into a song. It was the one song she was famous for and she sang it with all her heart and love. The crowd hushed in appreciation and drank in the performance. As she crooned the last notes, I saw tears mixed in with the rain as she opened her eyes again and her beautiful smile literally glowed, making the rain inconsequential.

She waved to me, waved to the crowd, and slid into the seat beside her loving husband. The door closed and they drove away. On the balcony, I cried, feeling a heavy weight on my heart followed by a lifting of joy. They were alone together now, and I would not see them again.

I awoke with a similar sadness as I tried to make heads or tails out of the vivid memory. I sat in my bed, looking down at my hands and I could see the “me” of my dream doing the same thing. We shared an emotion that I could not comprehend except that I knew there was a link somewhere to the “now”.

Today, I remember Leo “Les Barker” Bachle – creator of Canada’s famous WW2 hero: Johnny Canuck. He passed away on this day back in 2003 and a part of me is wondering if his wife (whom I last saw at his post-mortem inauguration and honoring at the 2005 Joe Shuster Awards) has gone on to ride with him in that limo…

I still remember.

From Primedia 1997, happy smiles shared with Les…

Happy Anniversary!

Today marks 8 years that my sweetie and I have been “dating” 🙂 Yes, we’re married now (very, very, extremely happy!) but that doesn’t mean it’s not nice or important to remember how long we’ve been together and how amazing it’s been 🙂 Ti amo, bella mia 🙂

Which makes it really cool that today is ALSO the day we took possession of our first home together! 4 years ago today, we moved into a home we could not believe actually belonged to us 🙂 (for those who haven’t already read the story, you can find it on my site via these links: Part 1 – Getting it, and Part 2 – Moving in!

And what nicer way to start the day then to head over to the Doc’s so we could hear our daughter’s heartbeat? 🙂 Baby’s doing fine and is on-target in every way. Looks like the due-week of June 19 through June 22nd still stands. Next appointment is in 2 weeks 🙂

Time is flying by, but when it’s filled with such good things, love, and happiness, it doesn’t matter! 🙂

Unbelievable

the more things change… the more they don’t. seriously.

it’s been years… years I tell ya that I’ve had to fight against negativity from people. and now, after such an uphill battle, i got to the point where the GO-BADLIFE team consisted of only a handful of folks (like, perhaps 7) all of whom were easy to deal with (hey, when you know how to deflect a negative attack, it all becomes relative).

there’s been one person, however, whom I’ve always defended. or, as Chantale puts it, i’ve constantly made allowances for them.

seriously, though, enough is enough. it’s time to put my foot down and give no quarter.

and thus, another one bites the dust. let them stew in their own juices. my life is full of enough Positive to outlast any Negative, but that doesn’t mean I should allow the negatives to still impact me.

Another year over…

Well, it’s done for another year. Taxes have been completed and filed electronically for myself and Chantale. Now we can sit around and wait for the assessments to confirm it was all properly processed…

Well then!

I just realized that today marks 6 years that Chantale and I have been living together! It was 6 years ago today that she moved in all her stuff with me (after doing that part-time thing 🙂 ).

Wow. I know I always get to talking about anniversaries at this time (what with next Thursday marking 8 years that we’ve been together (and 4 years that we’ve owned a house together)), but still… it’s a wonderful feeling 🙂

6 wonderful years of bliss living together. Just the way it should be 🙂

Life.

I’ve been reading and thinking about a John Barrymore quote for over a month now but never ventured to share it online. Time and other distractions just made it impossible. This morning, however, with the quote in my direct view, and in light of having taken care of business with that incredible 100th issue of Comicopia, I am sharing it:

“A man is not old until regrets take the place of dreams”
-John Barrymore

Makes sense, doesn’t it? A simple truth. Don’t let life and reality get you down to such a degree that you forget what it is that rushes your blood, ignites your desire, and quickens your pace. Only when those engines die out will your body break down and get you feeling old…

Happy thinking.

Comicopia 100

I’ve been wanting to post this all day but have been too busy to do so! The reason I wanted to post earlier is because evening posts are not “replied” to much whereas morning posts get more traffic 🙂

At any rate, here is the amazing/ wonderful jam piece incredibly orchestrated by Gabriel Morrissette with help from many Friends of Comicopia! Here is The Mysterious Minute-Man & Friends welcoming you to our 100th Issue of Comicopia!

Don’t Ticket Me.

Last weekend (I think) I caught a glimpse of a news report stating that Montreal Police were cracking down on jaywalkers. Now, I know they’ve upped their attacks on speeding with the number of radar traps around town at an incredible high, but that’s understandable. Something about summer weather that makes people’s feet heavy on the pedals… 🙂

Still, anyone who’s spent any time in montreal knows that for the citizens here, red lights or intersections are really more like “suggestions” to pedestrians. Thus, the idea of ticketing jaywalkers is tough to swallow. We literally can’t stop our bodies from lunging across a street if there are no cars coming.

However, something clicked for me on Monday. I was walking back to work after a nice lunch meetup with an old friend and I found myself stopped at a red light. The news report flashed through my head but so did something else: what does crossing give me? What gain is there to my life?

If I were to cross, what could happen? Well, I could get hit by a car I didn’t see at the moment (regardless of years of experience, if there’s one thing you can count on, it’s the stupidity of drivers… “other” drivers, of course 🙂 ). Secondly, I could be seen by a cop and given a ticket.

Now, I asked myself, what was this for? Would it “get me to the church on time” or something as equally important? Nope. I’d be crossing the street, possibly gaining a minute on my travel, just to get back to the office? Huh? Was that worth a possible accident or throwing away money I don’t have? Definitely not.

So, I stayed on the sidewalk, waiting for the lights to change to green, while enjoying the music coming through my mp3 player. And you know what? I actually enjoyed my walk and my lunchtime a bit more. Wow. An unexpected gain.

You can imagine how much of a freak I felt, though… 🙂

Blah!

I’ve been awake since 4:30am. Not by choice. I couldn’t fall back to sleep for the 90 minutes I had left before my alarm. Also not by choice.

Brain activity is making me want to knock myself out with a baseball bat so that I could at least be unconscious for more than 4 or 5 hours at a stretch…

Doing too much

I knew this week was going to be somewhat “killer” in the sense that I had some very real deadlines to do a slew of things to prepare for this coming weekend. With the home renovations time getting shorter and more critical, to Comicopia’s 100th Issue this week, my time was/ is severely limited.

Last Saturday/ Sunday, Chantale’s dad and I finished installing the hanging ceilings in Melyssa’s new room (hence shall it be referred to). It looks *really* good. I had finished all the walls and painting but after requiring the closing off of the fuse box, there was some more plastering to be done. So, the plan was: Monday night plaster up the joints, Tuesday apply second/ finishing coat of plaster, Wednesday 1st coat of primer and sweep/ vacuum the floor, Thursday first coat of finishing paint, Friday last coat of finishing paint and wash the floor. I’m happy to say that this schedule was kept and thus tonight will finish the prep work because tomorrow, we lay down the floating floor!

So, technically, after this weekend, we’ll have a room we can begin ‘modeling’ and moving furniture into. All that will be left will be the closet doors, the baseboards, the door framing. Minor. We can actually concentrate on emptying Melyssa’s old room and prepping it for painting and modeling for the Baby! It feels really satisfying to get to this point. After that’s done, I will also continue with the basement to finish off the other walls we had put up for the “hallway” as well as possibly the ceiling. Then, it’s the stairwell.

Keep in mind that all this week, the only time open to me was from after Kyle went to bed (technically around 7:30pm to 8pm). After the basement work, I would hit the computer to continue prepping the Comicopia issue. I brought the majority of the copy work in on Wednesday and picked it up on Thursday along with a few other sections. Been a while since a single copy visit was close to $150. This afternoon, I’m heading back to bring in the final documents, meeting up with Gabriel to get the final FINAL covers, and getting those printed up as well. On the way home, pick up a slew of GWEs (Great White Envelopes) and then start binding this evening and hopefully getting the mailing ready. The plan is to get the envelopes in the mail tomorrow afternoon for Monday morning send off (there’s no mail service on the weekends although I can drop off packages on Saturdays).

Maybe next week I can have an hour or two to continue some translation work (I finally got my last invoice paid early this week so I actually HAVE some money to pay for the mailing).

Needless to say, I’ve been going to bed by midnight and still getting up at around 6am for more “intensive” days. Needless to say, I’ve been quite tired and a little cranky (sorry, sweetie!). Needless to say, things should be much better come Saturday night.

Seriously, though, folks. One. Hundred. Issues. Bi-Monthly for almost 17 years. I’ve been involved in running it for 16 years and actively running it for 15 years. It’s one hell of an accomplishment! Do they give awards for that?? LOL!

There will be some nice surprises with this issue… not the least is the fact that we’ve surpassed 200 pages where we’ve been at around 150 for the last year or so 🙂

You should technically be getting a glimpse of the cover by mid next week… or later 🙂
