Friday Quick Update

Hello. I’m the one home tonight for a few hours of sleep and then back to the ICU tomorrow very early morning.

Not much to say. It all feels like a haze although I definitely remember each hour of sitting, waiting, trying to get Charlize to sleep…

Good news is that the medication they’re giving her to relax her heart muscle so it won’t seize up during her tet spells seems to be working. She didn’t have any spells from the time we were admitted in ICU yesterday until 6pm today. And then, at 6, she had one for about 5 minutes. However, no “seizing” up! No cranky wailing, etc. She turned blue, but she was in the best of moods! Laughing, cooing, just happy on her back. So, that’s definitely a good sign.

On the less positive side of the scale, we’re not coming home tomorrow morning. We’ll probably be brought back to the PICU and will stay there until… ? No idea. From our vantage point it looks like we’re sticking around until they reopen the O.R. and having the surgery more than likely on the 28th. Yay for an early surgery… Hissss for staying an extra week and half at the hospital…

Anyhow, no time for replies, just this quick post (both here and on Chantale’s page) to thank you all for your words of support and encouragement. I’ve gotta get some rest now so I can relieve Chantale in the morning. Hopefully she manages a few hours herself tonight…

Wife update

Hi all,

Chantale here. Mike is in the pediatric Intensive Care Unit with Charlize. We were at the hospital all day and were admitted there for observation. Baby girl is good but needs to be stable and cannot have more Tet spells. It’s not looking right now that they can stabilize her, but a few more days will give us a better picture. However we do believe that the surgery will be in the near future.

Keep us in your thoughts and prayers. I came home to gather some stuff and am heading back out very early tomorrow morning.

there ya go…

well, we just spoke with the Hospital. They asked us to bring Charlize in this morning to check her out. So, we’re off.

Reality Check

Sometimes, you try not to talk about things because you’re trying not to believe that issues are a little worse than you expected. I’m not talking about complete self-delusion here. I’m just talking about… the “hope” that things are not as bad or negative as they seem…

Charlize is doing great. That’s a fact. She’s doing really, really well… When she’s not having any spells.

That, unfortunately, is a fact as well.

About two weeks ago, what we understood to be tet spells (that she would have about once a week) started becoming more frequent. In fact, they even changed. Where she would cry until she became blue before… she was now crying BECAUSE she was turning blue. In other words, she would be fine one moment, blue the next, and then have a fit.

It’s a great self-defense mechanism because when she’s screeching like that, we can hear her no matter where we are and can run to her aid. We do manage to calm her down relatively quickly and then she… collapses somewhat. She gets lethargic, gray pallor to her skin… almost clammy. She’ll take some time to recover, but is then back to being the normal, happy, baby we know.

Like I said, about two weeks ago she started having them more frequently. Like every other day. Then, twice a day every other day. Recently, like yesterday for example, she had three spells.

We’re really looking forward to next week’s appointment where we can check her oxygenation level again and more than likely have another ultrasound. When I spoke with the pediatric cardiologist on call about her spells a few weeks ago he mentioned the possibility of putting her on medication if things deteriorated too quickly (which, let’s be honest, it has).

Ideally, they will do everything they can to only have the surgery at or after she’s six months old. That will be on Xmas Eve. I’ve been expecting it to happen in January. I spoke with our Pediatric Cardiology Nurse yesterday and she told me it could go until February. It’s still too early to tell. What I do know for a fact is that if she has a really severe spell (we can’t get her to recover) and we 9-1-1 it to the hospital, they will not let her go without operating.

I’m going to call them again later this morning because I’ve got a number of other questions that have come to us that I’d like to get answered. For example, is a spell painful? What does she go through when it happens? What does she feel? If she ends up on medication, what kind of medication is it? How and for how long will she take it? What exactly will it be like post-op? How long of a recovery will she need before she is “safe” to travel? We had already canceled all our travel plans for the last month as well as the ones I had planned during this period of time. (Which means that as much as I really want to go to TCAF… *really* want to go to TCAF… really REALLY want to go to TCAF – more than I wanted to go to the last PCon) I can’t because (a) I can’t bring her and (b) I won’t go without them at this point. But that’s just car travel. My sister-in-law is getting married in the Dominican Republic in May. Somehow, I don’t believe I will be going to that. It all depends on (a) how Charlize is doing, (b) how the surgery goes, (c) how her recovery will be, (d) what kind of follow-up she’ll require post-op. Love my sister-in-law, though I do, I love my daughter more. I will not do anything that will put her in any kind of risk.

Up to now, Chantale and I have been somewhat “shielding” everyone from Charlize’s tet-spells. When they’ve happened during times where others have been around, we’ve simply acted like it was a regular cranky spell and that she “wanted to be rocked” and walked away with her. We didn’t want everyone to worry. No, actually, we didn’t want everyone to panic. Panic does not help soothe a baby who’s very attuned to those around her. But I’m not going to shield anyone any more. Our Best Friends, Francisco & Line, were over last night and it happened. While Chantale soothed Charlize, I explained to them what was happening and why. It’s the reality we have to live with for a few more months.

Our daughter will be completely fine and cured in less than a year from now. We know this. But until that time, she will need a bit more constant attention and care than we had “expected” to. We also know this. It was just about time to accept it and make others know and accept it, too.

A little shocked…

As with many others who’ve posted already, I am a little shocked to read of Mike Wieringo’s passing…

44 years old? Just like that? With so many possible years left to share those amazing pencils of his? Wow…

Very long, open, ramble…

I got a little bit of a shock this week. A friend of mine let me know that he’s getting divorced. He wouldn’t have told me except that someone else we were with let it be known that he was heading on vacation with a few single women and he kind of puffed himself up and mentioned that he was single, too. When I looked at him in confusion, he just let it out. As I continued to stare in a bit of shock, he shrugged his shoulders and told me to give him a call and that there’s a lot to talk about.

I’ve known him for about 6 years but have been helping/ talking to him for something like 3 years, coaching him on what he could/ should do to keep his relationship going. The advice I gave was top-notch and would have definitely helped. The problem, unfortunately, was that except on one occasion, I never really felt like he was in it trying to keep it together any more.

They have a four year old son and all I can be thankful for is that they didn’t have a second child like they were talking about last year.

All the signs were there. He liked to keep going out with his friends. He liked to keep going out drinking. He didn’t really see himself as a father. His eyes and imagination roamed. A lot. You could see that, emotionally, he wasn’t fully committed.

You know what’s the funniest thing? The entire time he kept coming to me for help and advice, I knew that he was going through the motions. Yes, I knew and he knew that the impact on his son would be rough. But I could also easily sense that as far as his wife was concerned… he wouldn’t mind leaving her behind.

What do you do when you KNOW a friend of yours is heading for splitsville? Do you share your concerns? Do you let them go on and be there to pick up the pieces? Do you try to talk to them individually and offer your shoulder? Do you believe in interventions?

I’m asking this in general and would really like to hear your thoughts/ opinions. If a friend of yours suddenly pulled you aside and told you, “look, I don’t think your relationship is healthy,” or, “I’m afraid your relationship is going to fail because…” would you tell them to piss off? Would you be offended? Would you be grateful that a friend cared enough to want to speak up or would you feel insulted that a friend could think that badly of a “relationship” you are involved in?

Sometimes, I see “signs” and it really saddens me. Guys who don’t take full responsibility for the lives they’re leading and just expect their women to “deal with it”. Guys who continue to go through the same pre-marriage routines with their buddies, etc, AFTER their weddings with the “she knew this is what I liked to do before we got married”. Guys who *say* they care about their family… but then continue to spend the majority of their time at work. Guys who put their work commitments ABOVE their loved ones. Guys who continue to stick with, if not dead-end jobs, then dead-end companies, instead of striking out to find BETTER paying jobs. Guys whose dream job is to be on the road instead of at home with their family. Guys who are so absent at home that they don’t even REALIZE or NOTICE that their wives are suffering so much they’re close to mental and/or physical breakdowns. By the by, this goes both ways.

Guys! Gals! Your JOB does not keep you warm at night. Your JOB will not be holding your hand when you’re DYING. Your partners are not your servants! Your significant others are not there to keep your house or apartment clean! Your KIDS are NOT your PETS! Your children need LOVE and ATTENTION. HOW will they get your attention if you’re always OUT or at WORK?

Isn’t it enough the daycare lady is raising your kids during the work week? Do you really want another STRANGER to raise them during the weekends? Because, seriously, if you lose them, that’s what’s going to happen.

Get off the fucken pot and make a TRUE commitment to the person you agreed to spend your life with. And for all the “young” folks thinking of taking that step into a full-time life together with someone else… THINK. LONG and HARD at what kind of a life you want to make for yourself. Will you still get along when one or both of you are unemployed for months on end? Will you still be able to support each other emotionally when the going gets rough? Because the going WILL get rough at one point or another. Trust and Respect are the two strongest emotions that must be included with LOVE. And you have to mean it.

I am on Paternity Leave for two weeks. These, with the three I’ve already taken, will eat up the 5 weeks allowed by the Government. Financially, as you’ve read before, it’s really rough. But being able to spend all this time with my FAMILY… that’s priceless. Let the Credit Card explode. Eventually, I will be able to pay it off. Not taking THIS time to be with my kids? I could NEVER regain these moments again. Charlize, at 6 weeks, has already changed SO much! I’m so glad I’ve been here to see it! And Kyle? He’s gone through so many changes recently, becoming so much more of a little person, and it’s been absolutely phenomenal to be here.

I haven’t been posting much because I haven’t really had much to say. I’m working on some novels, I’m working on the APA, I’m doing the things I do even though this is the lowest I’ve felt about the comics industry in a LONG time, but I’ve mainly got my kids and wife on my mind and a lot of those feelings and emotions are private and I have no need to share here.

Tonight, with everyone asleep, I felt the need to log on and post and just let go. Am I this way because I’ve gone through the loss of family and realize how important it is now? Yes. And No. I’ve always known of the importance of family and fighting to keep them. I also know what it’s like to struggle with a dead cause. And because of that, I also know what it’s like to LIVE again. To wake up as though from a deep slumber under the ocean, gasping for breath, for life, for energy to keep going. That’s what it was like for me meeting Chantale. It was inevitable that I fell in love as deeply as I did. She saved my life. She made me true to myself, to the “me” that I was before I became corrupted by the life I was leading. 1999 did not just usher in a new century. It ushered in a new me. One who was determined to make the best, and the most, out of life. I’m still doing it. I just wish that others could do it, too.

I’m exhausted. And now I feel like I’m rambling. And it’s almost an hour that I’ve been writing. So, I’ll just stop and go to bed…

Wow.

Boy, do I feel like I’ve just been “screwed with my pants on” to extend a quote I recently read…

I went to get the covers printed up for Comicopia 102 only to find that the shop I’ve been using for years… has a new owner. Yup, you can see this coming a mile away, hm?

Needless to say, my “contact” there did not get a chance to come talk to me as she jumped out of her office to introduce herself. She took my order, impressed that I knew exactly what I wanted including the type of stock used, and handed it to my contact. Thus, the work got done the way I’m used to, but I also knew I was not going to get my regular discount.

Her first bill was $8 more than usual. I thought, “okay, no problem”. However, once the job was completed, she realized she made a mistake! Suddenly, the price becomes over 325% greater than what I’ve been spending and have been allocating!!

Ouch.

On one hand, it goes to show just how much the previous owner had to and could have been losing (he retired, so I don’t think he really cared). On the other hand… I have to start investigating other shops…

Phoenix Order

The family recently saw “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”. I don’t really want to post about it since those who are interested have already seen it. However, there is one thing I felt really worth mentioning: the casting for Luna and Umbridge? Brilliant. Simply brilliant!

c’est tout.

So that’s what it is!

On my way to/ from work, I usually pass by The Mount Stephen Club (which Francisco and I have always referred to The Hellfire Club 🙂 ). It’s been used so often for movies that there’s practically a continuous crew around it (the last one I specifically remember was a scene in The Aviator. I recognized it right away as it was the same spot Francisco and I would have our espressos together! 🙂 ).

Anyhow, yesterday afternoon I passed by and they had set up these catwalks all around the windows and draped them to simulate something. I saw Maria Bello’s chair at the entrance and realized they were actually filming (as opposed to prepping). I found out that the movie was referred to as “M3” and they’ve actually been here for a while now (here being on and around the island). I did a quick IMDB scan today and found that M3 is actually: The Mummy 3 (Tomb of the Dragon Emperor)! Aha! Finally! A real sequel to the Mummy movies! 🙂

And then I giggled at the thought that George of the Jungle is just a block away from me… Battling it out with Jet Li… LOL! 🙂

Ah, I love movie-making… 🙂
