Moving on…

I realize I haven’t posted in over a week. This has been due to being busy, but mainly because I was still trying to come to grips with what had happened. When you find out a colleague you’ve known and worked with for five years has murdered his wife and child followed by himself, you’re left with too many questions and just not enough support.

The hardest thing I found that first day of the news, was trying to keep up a brave front in order to be “strong” for my employees. I wanted them to know I cared for how they were feeling and making myself available to them (and anyone else on my floor) who needed to talk. Unfortunately, while I was too busy doing that, I wasn’t really able to express my own concerns and feelings to others. I tried doing so with my “peers” but as they hadn’t worked with him as closely as I (and I not as closely as others) they couldn’t understand.

A week of introspective thoughts while attempting to get as much information as possible led me to discover who it was in the company who had received the phone call telling them, “______, do me a favor, when you get this message, call the police”. I’ve often wondered at my own reaction to that kind of a message. Heck, every time one of my employees calls me or leaves me a very early morning message, I worry. The message could just as easily have been left in my voicemail box. Truthfully, six months from now, he could have been reporting to me for a specific project.

As I said, this has been a very busy week -made more-so because I had forgotten that Wednesday and Thursday I’d be out of the office on a First-Aid training course. The course was really great and it feels wonderful to be empowered with the knowledge of possibly saving a life. I’ve always been one to go out of my way to help people, and this gives me an extra tool to be able to do so. Anyhow, one of the other students (and another friend of mine (another divorced-dad-fighting-for-his-kid)) was there. He had also worked closely with George having spent many nights on system migrations with him. He was just as confused and disturbed as I was and also admitted to not being able to talk with anyone else around him. Luckily, we were able to talk with each other and it helped the both of us.

I did find out one other piece of information which began to help make better sense of things. In a note left behind, George wrote that the had been diagnosed with cancer. He knew he was going to die and he did not want to leave his daughter (whom he adored) with his wife (who suffered from major psychological problems) since they could not get along at all and fought constantly and they had no other relatives here. His solution was murder-suicide.

It’s the worst possible solution I could ever think of. I obviously don’t know the stress and burdens he had to endure for the last 17 years, but… wow. I’m still in shock, but at long last it’s slowly fading. I still “see” and even “hear” George, though (as I mentioned before, he was one of the last people I saw when I left work on the day he went home to do the deed) but I’m moving on….

Left with too many questions…

I came into work today and was hit with this horrible news. It’s from the Journal de Montreal (hence in French) but basically relates that a family was found dead recently, victims of a double-murder followed by a suicide.

He was a colleague of mine. Pat, you may have worked with him.

Woah!

I just realized the calendar! It’s september 30th! This means it’s time for a round of Birthday Wishes to otherwise known as Bunnyfluff the Destroyer and otherwise known as The All-American Tolkein Elf!!

This means that tomorrow’s the first of the month, also known as the dreaded STATS DAY! Aiee! Guess who’s coming in early?

Hey! ! Petit Oiseaux Matin? 🙂

Edit: Well, Marc has to come in early as well tomorrow, so we’ll both be here at 7am. I’ll start the extraction/ load process and then we’ll head out to Chez Cora’s for their Early Bird 🙂 Mmmmm crepes! :>

A New Feature Begins

Earlier this week, I realized that it had been a few weeks since I put up a Fast Fiction piece. And then, I also realized that one thing I missed in putting together these pieces (and what makes them attractive to many) is the lack of continuity. And so, I came up with the idea of furthering the fiction pieces by actually having one central character involved in all the drama. Lots of brain chatter later, I came up with what I call the “My Eyes Burn” stories (which will probably end up simply being referred to as the “I Can See” series. Sometimes ugly, sometimes nice, possibly brutal, it’ll be interesting (to myself!) to see where I go with this. As always, they will be LJ-cut so those who don’t want to read them, won’t have to.

Danke.

Thanks to everyone who touched base with me in regards to my previous/private entry. Your support is truly appreciated.

So, last night after I got home, Chantale pulled me back into the car and drove us to the Ste.Anne locks to sit by the boats and watch the sun set. Casey was going nuts with all the new sights and smells, but outside of that, it was really nice and peaceful. Nothing like sitting by the river on a chilly night, huddled with your loved one to put things in perspective…

Afterwards, we went back home to drop off the dog and then drove over to Clyde’s in Pointe Claire for a pitcher of beer and a plate of nachos. Strangely enough, this was the first time we ever did this together! Sure, we’ve been out to pubs and such, but we’ve never gone to just hang out somewhere for beer before. Her sister had hinted at possibly showing up but she didn’t come. No biggie, actually, as it was really nice for the two of us to be alone and just chat.

One long topic of conversation ended up being about High School and reunions. My high school (St. Pius X) is finally having a reunion after 20 years. I’ve been over on classmates.com to see who’s registered and info on it and wasn’t too impressed by it. It was funny in that I’ve been on classmates forever now (actually having added some companies and been the first registrant on a number of schools) and suddenly it’s full of people. And yet… reviewing the list of names, I have to come to the conclusion that there really isn’t anyone I’m interested in finding out more about. Heck, I completely lost touch with these people 20 years ago outside of a VERY small handful of them who I lost touch with shortly thereafter. I can’t say I have any memories I want to recapture or reminisce about because a part of me feels I never fully enjoyed/ experienced my high school days like I should have. I never had to worry about cliques in that I fit in with everyone. I had links and friends in the Brains, the Jocks, the Punks, the Cool Kids. Nothing intimidated me. [shrug]

Chantale asked if there was anyone I would be happy to see after all this time. My first response was an old friend/ short-time girlfriend who’s currently working for Polygram in New York. I lost touch with her about 8-10 years ago when Polygram moved out of Montreal to headquarter in Toronto. Besides her, it would have to be my Secondary 5 English teacher, J. Massey, who ignited my writing spark through journals and encouragement of my poetry. I agreed I should go verify if any teachers would be attending and then make up my mind.

Nice Thing.

I just promoted one of my Employees, making this the second Jr. Programmer-Analyst I’ve helped reach Programmer-Analyst level in under a year (it might sound simple, but it isn’t, really).

It’s always a nice feeling to praise an employee and see them attain goals you know they can. I do have one more left I’m hoping to work on (I’m quite positive of it) and then I’ll have achieved my own personal goals in terms of “growing” or grooming employees 🙂 These may be my peers, but I’m quite protective of them, obviously 🙂 Now, next year, it might start all over again next year as I’m once again in need of a P/A for the team :>

That’s all I have to say right now 🙂

Zathras no more…

I just found out that Tim Choate who played Zathras on Bablyon 5 died enroute to a play rehearsal on September 24 when a car struck his motorcycle. He was only 49. What a bad year for Babylon 5 fans, losing Paul Winfield (Dr. Franklin’s father), Richard Biggs (Dr. Franklin) and now Tim Choate. 🙁

Click click click

I’m working from home today, doing that telecommuting thing. It’s amazing that I can get so much done without a VPN high speed connection. I use the VPN dial-up on my laptop if I need to grab any files from my drives at work, otherwise I use my regular desktop dial-up internet connection and work exclusively via OWA (MS Outlook Web Access).

And you know what? This has been the fastest Monday I’ve ever “worked”. We’re talking a solid 4-hour-straight run.

It’s amazing what you can do when you’re not constantly interrupted.

It’s also quite nice to be able to make some real coffee whenever I need it… 🙂 Of course, considering the lighting in the basement, what I need right now more than anything is some sun and fresh air… 🙂

Collections!

Just got back from Astro with a happy and unexpected purchase: The Collected CROSSFIRE!!! In something of a digest size! In black and white! I was not expecting this (as opposed to, say, waiting for the collected Grimjack and American Flagg) and it’s definitely a pleasant surprise! 🙂 It’ll be fun to read that on the train 🙂

Besides a few more Archie Digests (gotta feed the addiction you know!) I picked up the collected ShockRockets by Kurt Busiek and Stuart Immonen 🙂

Yay! Good comics to read! 🙂
