Two weeks later… where to begin?

I’m sitting at my desk in my hotel suite, a wonderful Vanilla Latte warming my insides, a cool breeze blowing in from the open balcony door, and all I can think of is… “I need a nap!” 🙂

Yes, it’s a little after 230pm my time (that’s 530pm back home) but my legs are throbbing from the 2.5hours of sprint/walk I gave it this morning as I walked around Emeryville 🙂 On top of that, my sleeping habits aren’t quite normal so that keeps me off-balance. All this week I would find myself nodding off at 630pm and barely able to stay awake past 10pm! Sheesh! You’d think I’d be used to the time zones by now 🙂

Work’s been quite busy. With “regular” 9 hour days, it still feels like there’s so much to do that when weekends come around (like today!) all I want to do is stay in bed and read or watch the varied movies/ tv shows I’ve brought along. Yes, there’s plenty of places I could be exploring (san francisco, san jose, sonoma, oakland, to name but a few) but I’ll be honest… without my Best Friend to share time with me, there’s really nothing I want to see!

Some folks may find that ridiculous, but when you’ve lived the kind of life I have, it’s easy to keep things in perspective and in priority. (Ha! And as normally happens when I think of my beloved, she appears! Skype call just came in so I got to chat with everyone for a few minutes 🙂 )

Speaking of my beloved and how life works… she was initially supposed to fly down here to California this weekend to spend it with me. Unfortunately, with a crazy schedule back home and the impending mess that is the union negotiations which could impact her daily job, she had to cancel it. And you know that part about how things happen for a reason? Well, here is more immediate proof. Had she been on the flight she was scheduled to be on, she would have been involved in this: http://www.ctv.ca/CTVNews/Canada/20110610/plane-windshield-crack-110610/

So, I’m sad I couldn’t have seen her this weekend, but I’m so much more relieved and happy that she’s at home, safe and sound!!!

It’s crazy, but on a daily basis I feel like I have tons to say, but then when I can finally squeeze some time in at the computer for myself… I go blank. le sigh. I do have something private important to say so I should be back later to do just that.

California Dreaming

Here I thought I’d be able to keep updating this blog steadily once I got to California. Turns out… I was a little wrong 🙂 But then again, I can’t say I’m “fully” here either, since this last week (and this coming week) have been pretty much about learning the ropes, meeting with folks, getting our bearings, and trying to build a routine. Friday was pretty much the first day it actually felt “real” in the sense that everyone besides the main work team had left and we were installed in our temporary teams and got involved. It will be the same on Tuesday but after that we have more training on Wednesday and Thursday followed by a very short day on Friday when the majority of us fly home for the weekend.

On the personal side, I’ve actually gotten up quite a few times at 400am PST in order to spend 20 minutes or so chatting with Kyle and Charlize (and Chantale of course) while they had breakfast/ got ready for school/work. Considering how my schedule has been and the fact that my body isn’t fully acclimated to the Pacific Time, it wasn’t that difficult. Plus, after the call I would just go back to bed for 2 hours which was very nice 🙂

I have never used Skype before, but let me confirm that if it wasn’t for that wonderful bit of technology, this whole project trip abroad would be one *very* difficult ride. As it is, with the number of hours we were connected during the weekend, I got to feel as though I was actually AT home, sitting on the couch perhaps, chatting with my family and even watching the kids play. It gave us a virtual sense of being in the same house – so when I had to attend to something in my suite (like laundry) it was simply like walking into another room. We could always hear each other and talk.

I must admit to having spent a lot of time/money shopping these last couple of days 🙂 Couldn’t be helped in one sense as I didn’t bring along a full luggage when I fly here. So, I wanted some fresh work clothes to get me through these 2 weeks. I’ll be flying up more of my stuff when I come back on the 6th but it’s also nice to have new items :). The fact that our dollar is quite strong and the deals here are pretty good was also an incentive, I must admit 😉

Anyhow, at the moment, I still feel like there’s a lot to do to really be up to speed. But, it is coming so no worries there. As I said above, just have to get into a sustainable groove.

I have to dash now but had at least wanted to pop online to say “hello” 🙂

Out of the mouth of children…

Recently, during a family supper, Kyle suddenly asked Chantale, “Mommy, when you get really really old, are you going to die?”

Questions like these don’t phase us in the least, but they are quite surprising how they pop up without any links to a previous discussion. At least, not to us 🙂

At any rate, Chantale answered him in the affirmative and his response to that was to answer right back in an exasperated sigh. “*huff* I don’t like that! Then it’s too long before you come back to the earth!”

After a few more back-and-forths about the wait time and the end time and getting old, he finally confirmed, “I like being the parent!” and then he went back to his previous discussions of super heroes.

The entire time this was going on, I just sat back and watched him in wonder and pride, shaking my head at how this little boy’s brain works 🙂

*happy sigh*

Issue 123

Somewhat quite late in putting this up, as the issue has gone out weeks ago, but now is when I had the time and it’s quite a great cover that I still wanted to share it 🙂 I haven’t prepared the sampler pdf file for issue 123 yet, but there are a couple of others you can check out at the “eCopia” section of http://www.comicopia.net

“ALIVE!” he cried…

And so I am!

What a rock-n-rolling year it’s been with more changes and what feel like 100-foot waves crashing down all around me that it’s been a constant battle to stay upright, much less positive!

Let’s start the ball rolling with that new job I had planned to start this year. Bottom line, it did not work out. Too large a difference of opinion on too many key points that everything just fell apart. C’est la vie.

So, with no full-time job, what’s a guy like me to do? Well, get some new contracting gigs while applying for a new job, of course! 🙂 As exciting and busy as that’s been, though, I have to admit that I’ve been a lot busier just going through all the motions of admin setup/ paperwork with EI, etc, than being on actual contracts.

However, I know there are a number of opportunities opening up in the next few weeks so I just have to keep plugging away and hanging on… all the while keeping a very close eye on the flow of cash because bills still have to be paid, of course.

I am very close to finding out if I got an amazing job/position/role/ call it what you will, which is very exciting. Interview #4 was today and it went superbly well (as far as I could tell 🙂 )

Writing-wise, I’ve had to scrap and re-do my 2011 plans. It happens, but if this new plan works out, I’ll be quite happy with the progress. As always, time will tell 🙂

So there you go. I just wanted to pop in here and say ‘hello’ after trying to catch up with everyone yesterday morning. Did you know you can’t go back more than 600 messages when reading through your full friends pages? That’s as far as the system will let you go, but at least I did read them all 🙂

Hopefully I’ll be able to get back here more regularly. I still have a definite need for LJ and I want to make use of it, even if they end up being mainly private entries.

Insanity Reigns SUPREME!

Okay, not really 🙂 I`m just in one of those weird moods that comes from being offline for so long that everything becomes a little silly.

I started my new job this week and it`s been quite intense trying to learn a new culture and integrate myself while ALSO getting into my first mandate/ client and trying to absorb all I can about them and how I can help them!

So… all this to say that LJ has definitely fallen by the wayside for a bit. Perfectly normal until things get settled down again 🙂 In the meantime, though, I can tell you I do NOT miss waking up at 4am to get to work! Lol! My quality of life in that regards has definitely gotten much, much better.

My leisure reading has also been pushed for a bit (after getting seriously into my new Kobo eReader and loading it up with tons of books 🙂 ). Last week was my vacation week and outside of meeting with my clients one day, I spent the rest of it finishing off the majority of the renovations in the basement. Not at 100% yet, but it won’t be long now. The paint is up, the baseboards are up, etc etc. Touch-ups are mainly all that’s left. Then I can move onto my other renovation projects 🙂

The biggest hit, unfortunately, has been with my writing. The Anti-Bodies re-view/edit had to be postponed and with Comicopia’s deadline right around the corner I’ve gotta get into gear on that. Not to mention that ‘Wasted Youth’ and “Time After Time” have had absolutely no time put on them in months!

Such is the life of the Multi-Juggler 🙂

And on that note, I’ve gotta get supper started 🙂
