Powerless is…

being out of town for a convention, coming to your room after lunch and finding a voicemail message from your wife (whom you spoke with at 7am) telling you that she’s rushing your son to the hospital. No idea what time she called, no way to reach anyone else, just a constant ache from not being able to BE there to help…

in the end, it turned out to be an asthma attack brought on by some viral infection. I sure wasn’t expecting it regardless of the fact that it runs in the family (oblivious, niave, or hopeful… pick one)

Anyhow, he’s okay now and today was a better day for everyone. And exactly 48 hours from now, they’ll all be in my arms again.

So, I am currently sitting on my king-size bed here in Shingle Creek Resort in Orlando Florida. I’m surfing from my television set. My flat, wide-screen,one zillion-inch television set. It’s a bizarre experience (if somewhat frustrating).

The flight went very well although I must confess to being somewhat nervous about the whole thing. Seriously. I didn’t realize how nervous I was about flying until we actually landed and got our luggage.

The Resort is immense. The prices of everything are way too high. And it feels really bizarre being in another city so far away from my family. I was quite tired when we got here, but could not sleep no matter how I tried. Headache and extremely sore back didn’t help. But, it was nice to be able to see part of an NFL game on tv, though 🙂 In a happy coincidence, George of the Jungle was just starting when I turned on the television so I watched that for a bit 🙂 Chantale and I have fond memories of that movie 🙂

Anyhow, I don’t know how long I’ll have the ‘net for. At $13 a day, it’s a little much. But, at least I’ll be able to see pictures of the family 😉

Cab should be at my door at 5:30am tomorrow morning to take me to the airport. Orlando, here I come!

It’ll be interesting attending the first Agile conference, but at the same time I wish I didn’t have to be away from my family for a week… especially with my dad turning 72 tomorrow and Chantale taking the kids to the Xmas party (Kyle’s SO excited to be seeing Santa!) 🙂

Well. You normally wouldn’t think that you’d find an interesting and thought-provoking blog post about the sanctity of marriage in a blog about Comics… but today’s post from The Occasional Superheroine sure does that! One of my favorite passages is this (emphasis mine):

“I believe that the core value of sacrificing of one’s wants for the greater good of one’s spouse and child to be very heroic. I believe that the parent who goes into their 9 to 5 every day with the monkeysuit and the briefcase so their children can have proper health insurance is very heroic. I think withstanding the temptation to stray in order to keep stability in the family is very heroic. I think these are the everyday heroic things that go unnoticed by society — and not only goes unnoticed but is often sneered at.”
