Midnight… (or 2am…) one more night without sleeping…

well, here’s a story I never expected to write…

Picked up the kids today at the usual time to find out that Kyle hadn’t been doing too well. Seems he woke up from his nap with a really high fever which calmed down after some tylenol. He had also been coughing quite a bit and so his pump was administered at 330pm. Not a big deal – it happens. Rarely, but it does.

At home, however, I realized that he wasn’t doing too well and that his breathing was still quite labored. I gave him both pumps at 530pm and had to administer again at 7pm when things were getting worse still. I knew I had to take him to the hospital.

Chantale was working late tonight in preparation for some very important and intensive simulations that will take her away for 3 days this week. Unfortunately, she also had Kyle’s medicare and hospital cards so I got her to come deliver them while her mother also came over to stay here while Charlize slept (since Chantale had to get back to her team).

So, off to the Montreal Children’s Hospital I went. Things went really well -outside of the fact that Kyle had to have 3 other masks administered to him and we ended up staying there over 5 hours… He was extremely well behaved and we passed the time watching movies and making puzzles. But, by midnight he was really at the end of his rope. I managed to keep him going until we finally were released at 130am and within 10 seconds of driving off towards home – he was asleep.

He was a real trouper and I’m extremely proud of him. But it was also a very long and difficult wait. Now, I’ve got to keep giving him his blue pump every 4 hours for the next 24 hours, plus a special medication every night for the next four nights (we got a dose before we left), plus 2 puffs of flovent every morning and evening for the next two weeks…

Feels like it was one of the most severe asthma attacks he suffered through so far…

Blah!

woke up with an awful headache today… even though I’m so exhausted at night that i can barely make it to 930pm… I’m happy to say that the kids seemed to have settled into the new timezone after one night – so they slept right through the night (although Kyle did come see me as I was leaving the house at 520am asking for a kleenex πŸ™‚ so sweet as he whispers my name knowing he has to stay silent πŸ™‚ ).

so, for the first time in a few weeks now I actually slept more than 3 uninterrupted hours… but it seems it wasn’t enough because the alarm hit me like a ton of bricks… i’ve been sleeping like crap for weeks. my mind just does not want to settle down. stress levels were rising without my knowing it…

too much to do… too much to do…

the October report on my health was pretty good. But now, we’re entering November’s deep hits which means I have to be more vigilant. The sun lamp + vitamins + good breakfast morning routines are going to get their bigger workout in keeping the sad at bay. we’ll see how things go and i’ll report on that in a couple of weeks.

for now… coffee beckons before a full day of meetings kicks off…

Who’ll Protect me from You?

yoinked from

My marriage Doesn’t Need Protecting, Thanks.
Copy this sentence into your LiveJournal if you’re in a heterosexual marriage, and you don’t want it “protected” by the bigots who think that gay marriage hurts it somehow.

As of August 2008, my wife and I have been married for 5 years (and dating for almost 5 years before that). Not once during that span of time have I ever felt my marriage threatened by the actions of other individuals, be they gay, straight, undecided, experimental, or whatever. The notion that allowing two consenting adults who just happen to be of the same sex to share their lives — and to have that union recognized by the government — would do irreparable harm to the institution of marriage is, in a word, bullshit.

And I totally agree with what Dayton says on this topic:

“Gays getting married doesn’t “weaken the institution.” Heterosexuals not taking seriously the commitment they’ve made, either before God, the Justice of the Peace, or Elvis at the Chapel O’ Love in Vegas, weakens the institution. Heterosexuals going through life acting as though a marriage has all the same inherent responsibilities as maintaining your video rental membership weakens the institution. Heterosexuals fucking around on their spouses weakens the institution. So, shut up about what weakens the institution; you’re boring the shit out of me. Also, I’m not impressed with anything any Catholic priest has to say on this issue. Get your house in order, stop diddling your acolytes or covering up for those who do, and then — maybe — we’ll talk.”

He’s a very smart fellow that Dayton.

I always wonder, though, if Marriage is an institution… does that mean that we’re all nuts?

I’m dreaming of a white… halloween??

Ok, look. I get it. Winter is coming. Nothing can change that.

But seriously… SNOW? And October’s not even finished yet?!

I can’t handle that.

I just was NOT ready to be scraping ice and snow off my car this morning. I had the tools, etc, but mentally ready? No. Not yet.

Can I go into hibernation now?

*sigh*

In Vino Veritas

I mentioned how a couple of weekends ago we had visited my parents and introduced Kyle to the art of Wine Making. Well, here are a couple of pictures from that visit πŸ™‚ Hopefully next year we can get there at the start so he can be privy to the actual crushing of the grapes, filling of the jugs, along with the pressing, etc, etc. Considering how fascinating this is to everyone, you can imagine how kids react πŸ™‚

Just look at that smile! And those DIMPLES!! Where did those come from?! πŸ™‚ Click on that smiling face to go see the other two pictures.

I’ll probably add a few more later as I was in a bit of a rush to leave when I uploaded these at 5am!! πŸ™‚

Comicopia 109

I promised to post the cover to the latest Comicopia and since I got confirmation that members have started receiving their issues, I felt it was okay to share. So, here you go! The issue’s theme was “Strange Adventures” and the cover was a take on an old favorite (Adam Strange) from his days of Mystery in Space. Throw in the fact that it’s also Halloween… and you get Halloween on Rann with Adam Pumpkin Strange, Captain Skrull Comet, and Alana Ape Strange (because… if you remember your comics history… then you’ll recall how Apes always sell! πŸ™‚ ). The art is by Gabriel Morrissette.

The Great (Self-Repairing) Machine

“I’m a machine, you’re a machine, everybody that’s a body you know they are machines…”
-Schoolhouse Rocks

Back in November 2006, I was suffering some pretty severe headaches. I decided to go see my optometrist and we had discovered that my prescription (which I’d been good with for about 2 years prior if not more) needed to be cut by HALF! It was pretty incredible. Seems my left eye had gone from -1.0 to -0.50 and my right had gone from -0.75 to -0.50

We had made jokes about my body basically repairing itself and I attributed it to my own Mutant Healing Factor. Of course. πŸ™‚

The glasses I had bought for that prescription, unfortunately, were pretty faulty. By late last year the left handle snapped off and a month later, the right one did. Then, this year, the rubber covering the left arm simply fell apart. I tried to hold off as long as possible (yes, with black tape) until such time as my insurance would be active again (we’re covered something ridiculous like $100 per 2 years – my glasses plus rx cost $400!!). But, finally, this past week I had had enough and went in on Saturday to pick out a new pair.

It was noted in my records that it had been 2 years since my last checkup and I really should get an update to make sure the rx was still valid. Okay, makes sense. So, that’s what I did yesterday. Turns out I’ve got a really strong optic nerves, pressure’s good, etc, etc, etc… and my left eye went from -0.50 to -0.25. What the heck?

I don’t know what it is, but it sure seems like my body’s aging really well… πŸ˜‰
