Oh no!

I just read that Majel Barrett has passed away!! 🙁

And JUST last night Chantale and I watched her in “The Naked Now” as I was introducing her to the REMASTERED Star Trek Original Series… (and she couldn’t believe that Luxanna was actually Christine (Nurse Chapel) 🙂 )

Damn. You’d think I’d be used to the fact that so many of those I grew up watching on television and movies are obviously getting on in years… 🙁

Holiday Musings

I was having lunch with an old friend yesterday and the obvious topic of the Holidays came up. After discussing our plans, he summed it up by simply stating, “I just have to bear down and trudge through it” which made me laugh.

Isn’t that what we all have to do to a degree or other?

Seriously?

I can’t remember the last time we had a stress-free holiday season what with all the pressures and demands put upon it by work and family. Actually, maybe the last time would have been New Year’s eve of 2004 when Chantale and I spent it alone at home. Chantale was pregnant with Kyle and we decided that it being our last year alone together, we would simply take it easy. And, we did! We watched a movie, celebrated, played some Animal Crossing, watched the countdown, blogged, and of course celebrated with the Animal Crossing crew at the appropriate time 😉

I’m sure there were still pressures around that time with Christmas, etc, but the fact that the memories of that ONE night are so strong today block everything else out 🙂 Makes me wonder when the next such time/moment will be.

This year, we were initially supposed to go up to Lac St. Jean for a week in order to relax and celebrate Xmas. Instead, due to family pressures/ stress, we’re only leaving (probably) the 23rd and coming back (probably/hopefully) the 26th. The plan after that would be to pick up James and Melyssa on the 28th as we swing over to visit my parents for lunch. The 29th I’m back at work and am also on call for the 31st which means I need to stay close to a computer should a situation arise that requires my intervention.

Again, initially, we were supposed to do something at our place on the 31st but now the question is up in the air. We will probably go to my sister’s for supper as we actually haven’t visited her new house yet (and she moved in a while ago) and then head home. That way, we can actually take the 1st to ourselves as I’m back at work on the 2nd.

We do have supper with some old friends scheduled for Jan 2nd which we’re looking forward to (it’s been a long time since the kids have seen their Godfather after all 🙂 ).

All in all, though, I think it would be really great if we could squeeze a vacation somewhere in January. But, with all the bills that are due, and with the INCREASE in cost of living for 2009, it’s going to make it that much more difficult to stretch our pennies (forget stretching our dollars).

Ah well. At least life is still good, happy, and filled with things to look forward to 🙂 And now that I’ve walked away from an organization I’ve been with for the last 5 years (and very unhappy with for the last 3 years), I feel that the last of the negatives have been exorcised from my life. To celebrate, The Mysterious Minute-Men: Ready for the Future will be released on-line everywhere in 2009! More options to pick up a copy 🙂 Details will be forthcoming once I’m ready (still waiting on some pieces of art and to finish off the reviewing of some chapters).

I do believe I should be back online before Xmas, but, just in case I don’t, I’d like to wish everybody reading this a Happy, Joyous, and Festive Holiday Season!! 🙂 ‘Tis the Season, so be Jolly! 🙂

’tis the (start of) the season to be jolly…

Things are moving along with the Holidays in the Aragona-Turgeon household 🙂 A couple of week-ends ago, we put up our exterior lights and some decorations. Last weekend we put up our tree and decided to keep it very minimalistic this year. Since we weren’t going to be all together for Xmas, we went with our artificial blue spruce. It being somewhat smaller than usual (owing to the fact that our living room is much bigger than the one in our apartment 😉 ), we did not want to put up all our ornaments. Plus, not wanting to have to constantly chase after Charlize to not touch all those dangling pretty things, we also refrained from the usual “village” on the floor. So, the tree is very simple with straw star ornaments, red balls, and a couple of the special ornaments we’ve gotten over the years. Pictures will be forthcoming.

This weekend was also the back-to-back kids xmas parties. First up, Air Canada’s party at the hangar on Saturday. (it was after that party that we put up the tree). Secondly, the Standard Life party on Sunday (and did you hear/ read/ see that we reached our donation goal for the Telethon of Stars? $400,000.00 !! As I told our president last year when we raised $385,000.00, “this donation and cause means a great deal to us. It is because of such generous donations that so much research and development has been possible which directly led to our daughter’s life being saved.”)

Anyhow, although a bit more subdued than other years, the party was still a lot of fun. And, for your pleasure, I’ve put together a little picture montage of Kyle and Charlize at the party 🙂 Click the image of Kyle getting his nose on to see the rest 🙂

That actual page will be added to over the next few weeks as I add more pictures of events 🙂

Sad Little Tyke – Another Hospital Trip

It happened again. Wed overnight Kyle had been coughing quite a bit. Charlize was, too, so I thought it was everyone fighting off the same cold again. In the morning, he wasn’t wheezing but to play it safe I gave him his pumps and some cough syrup. He was as active as usual and off to daycare they both went.

By 9am, I get a phone call from the daycare telling me that he’s wheezing and she had to administer his pump. Okay, no problem. I call her back at 930 asking if she wants me to pick him up. She tells me all’s well. At 10am, she calls back saying he’s burning up and coughing again. I head out.

I get there at 1020 and he’s being rocked by her while she’s on her knees. She’s scared, crying because she’s never seen him like this. I take him from her and get him dressed. He’s hurt, crying, coughing. I calm him down and get him into the car. He refuses his pump but I manage to talk him into it and within a few minutes he’s asleep.

Luckily, the 20 isn’t as packed as I thought it would have been and we get to the Montreal Children’s Hospital within 35 minutes. We check in, register, and are brought to the trauma crash room. The doc’s are confused because his stats are pretty bad (89% 02 saturation, coughing) but no wheezing. Strangely enough, it seems like his right lung was seized and not both – which made it difficult to detect. 3 masks are given in quick succession and he immediately starts to get better.

He’s monitored for a couple of hours and is doing well enough to be moved to the asthma room. We stay there another 2 hours (and get another mask) and just when it looks like we’re going to stay another hour, the doctor checks in and states that he doesn’t need a fifth and is happy with what she heard. As we’re talking and she’s writing up prescriptions, he starts coughing again. Again, she’s confused and concerned but gives me directives and allows me to leave. I was positive that had she listened again she may have decided against letting us go.

Luckily it’s early enough that we’re not stuck in traffic on the way home. I get to the daycare, pick up Charlize, and head home. The rest of the night was spent trying to keep Kyle from running around. And you can imagine how impossible a task that was. He’s hyped up on fatigue, his pumps, and everything that happened… and there’s no way to get him to stop. In fact, once Charlize was in bed, the only way Chantale and I got him to calm down was to hold him. I rocked him in the dark for at least 20 minutes before he was calm enough for me to put him in his bed. It took a few hours more, but he finally fell asleep. He coughed a few times overnight but not as bad as the night before.

I was so fried. Luckily, Chantale, although jet-lagged from flying back from Vancouver via Toronto, still had plenty of energy and was able to lift me out of my fatigued blue funk.

Today, I brought Charlize to daycare and am staying home with Kyle. One of the only ways to get him to NOT run around so much is if she’s not around. Otherwise, he’s always on her. Chasing her, teasing her, running around her… I’ve got to pump him every 4 hours again as well as give him meds for the next 4 days plus his orange pump morning and night for the next 2 weeks.

James and Melyssa are coming tonight… and we’re seeing Santa twice this weekend… I think I’ll have a bit of difficulty keeping him calm…

Cubicle Groundhog

Just popping my head out from the ground to look around and say “Boo!”

Very busy. Lots going on, lots to do. Expozine was a really great experience. I put pics up on Facebook but don’t have the url right now. I’ll post it here later.

Comicopia deadline for issue 110 is next week (and it’s amazing how many folks who stopped by our table on saturday had absolutely NO clue as to what an APA is!! Seriously! Out of the ?? folks (I ticked off numbers on my notes but don’t have those with me now :)) who came by, only ONE person was familiar with it!).

Maybe that’s the real reason so many of you reading don’t answer my call to join or get sample copies. Hmm. Food for thought.

As for other food for thought, my latest article is up on Helium. It’s currently ranked #1 on the articles on Seasonal Depression. Here’s the link: How to beat the Winter Blues

Ciao!

Ka-Zar Summaries

Back in the late 1990’s, I had been approached to provide summaries of Ka-Zar’s past comic book appearances. This was upon the launch of the new Waid/Kubert series and it was specifcally for an article to appear in the spanish-translated series.

So, I hunkered down and got to work, basically going through each appearance and writing my thoughts on each book/ storyline. It was a lot of fun (which I stretched out to other series like Freedom Fighters). These summaries never appeared anywhere so a few years later I printed them up in Comicopia. A few years ago I posted them up on my Written Articles site. However, I had only posted the first 2 batches, completely forgetting the third!

A recent email request by someone looking for guidance on which of the Bruce Jones “Ka-Zar The Savage” books would be worth his time reminded me that I never put THOSE summaries online! Ooops! Now, finally, years later, this has been rectified 🙂

If you’d like to re-live that wonderful series through my eyes of over 10 years ago, I invite you to go read through Ka-Zar The Savage Notes #3 of 3. Lots to say considering there were only 34 issues 🙂
